North Carolina is dotted with so many wineries and vineyards it'd take one a whole week or month to visit them all. From award-winning red wines, sweet southern muscadine, and refreshing, crisp whites like sauviogn blanc - there's no limit on just what grapes, and wines, can be produced in the Tar Heel state. While one might certainly want to take a day to explore a few there's always the question of -- who's going to drive? One way to sip, travel, and enjoy...without the hassle of finding a designated driver is taking a wine trolley tour through Hendersonville's Trolley Company.
The Trolley Company offers five different, specialized wine tours for anything from special events (birthdays, bachelorette parties) to a fun girls' trip spent in beautiful scenery sipping delicious vino. The five tours include the Apple Country Tour, Vino Al Fesco, Bon Appétit, Wine & Dine, Catawba Valley Wine Tour, and customized wine tours
Each tour offers something different. The Catawba Valley tour visits wineries near Morganton. One includes a small, organic winery. Another offers big, Bordeaux-inspired wines of both red and white. The third winery specializes in Bordeaux-style as well but comes complete with breathtaking views right from the tasting room. If you're looking for some charcuterie to complete your tasting - cheese, lunch and tasting room fees are including in the ticket price. The Catawba Valley wine tour will run every Thursday through November and departs from the Westgate Mall in Asheville at 930 a.m.
If you're looking for views and food to pair with your vino both the Wine & Dine and Bon Appétit Tours are the way to go. Wine & Dine is an evening tour that ups the elegance. Your stops include an elegant tasting room and also a winery that overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains. The tour includes a three course French dinner with items that pair perfectly with each sip. The educational and delicious Wine & Dine tour runs every Wednesday through November with a minimum of 8 guests per tour. The "multi-flavor" Bon Appétit Tour specializes in vineyards making traditional, French-style wines. One winery is situated on a repurposed family farm and the second offers stunning views from the breezy, outside deck to take it all in. The French-style lunch is included in price of ticket and tours run on Thursdays through November. Both tours depart from Westgate Mall in Asheville.
If you're looking for a more intimate-style Trolley Tour, the Vino Al Fresco Tour features stops at three boutique wineries in North Carolina's horse country. Each stop offers its own unique flair, which keeps the journey interesting. The boutique wineries make surprisingly different wines and for the amateur sommelier it's a perfect experience, as the wines are award-winning, and elegantly crafted. The tour is also somewhat educational as it allows guests to meet winemakers and learn about the wines made. The tour also departs from Westgate Mall, running Friday through November and is open to groups of 10 or more.
The Apple Country Wine Tour includes more than wine but also a stop at Sierra Nevada Brewery. Called 'Malt Disney World,' the impressive building boasts a gorgeous, expansive tap room, delicious food and an impressive brewing area. But before beer you'll stop by two wineries located outside of Hendersonville. One is 'casual, country-style' with a laid back tasting room. The second offers a bit of upscale vibes...both feature stunning views of the rolling hills of North Carolina's wine country. Book this tour fast, as October is the last month it's available. All wine tasting fees are included in price of the ticket, with boxed lunches available for purchase. Departs from Westgate Mall on Fridays and is open to groups of 5 or more.
From a unique way to spend a 'girls day,' to planning a surprise party for a loved one, a fun bachelorette tour, or even just getting a group of friends together to drink and (not drive)...the various wine trolley tours offered are catered to every type of wine drinker with a dose of fun and adventure!
