Craving a bit of authentic Italian? You really can't beat handmade pasta, and especially the recipes of three Italian grandmas. Tre Nonne is a relative newcomer to the dining scene of Winston-Salem...but don't let the exterior or interior fool you. While it's small and simple, the restaurant packs big flavor. No visit to The Old North State is complete without a sampling of local barbecue. Big Oak is literally just a walk up window with a few picnic tables outside. Greenville, a fairly populous area, has been named among the best places in the nation to launch a business. Here, locals can point you to businesses of all sizes. Hiding out in western Chatham County is a modest diner with old-school attitude. Entering this little joint is like stepping back in time. 6. Dame's Chicken and Waffles, Durham

Durham is among the most populous cities in the state, and as such it is home to some incredible dining. Nonetheless, Dame's Chicken and Waffles is stand-out. The interior of Dame's is simple and to the point, with a small window in the back that gives you a nice view of the kitchen. One of my favorite parts is just how simple the interior is. No need for fanciness when the food is THIS amazing. Be prepared for a long wait on the weekends -- diners can't get enough of their casual jazz soundtrack and indulgent fried chicken. 7. Pass the Salt, Currituck

You'll feel right at home in this former house, and cozy features like a fireplace will encourage you to unwind. Tucked away in the Outer Banks, this unassuming restaurant offers upscale southern cuisine. While the interior is cozy and coastal, the food will blow you away! A must-stop! 10. Mecca Restaurant, Raleigh

Are you ready to step back in time? Mecca has been around for ages (since 1930!), and locals can't get enough of it. It fits right in with the historic Raleigh.
