Deep within the Blue Ridge, a true gem of BBQ and burgers is hiding. It's the type of place, at first glance, you might drive past. It flies under the radar and as someone who is always searching for the next great under the radar restaurant, it's easy to believe I've found that at The Tin Shed in Spruce Pine. Located in a town just shy of 3,000 residents, it's a place that deserves more than local celebrity status, but is worth a drive and visit.
The Tin Shed is fairly new, having just opened in 2017 on the grounds of Soggy Bottom Farms.
While most North Carolina BBQ restaurants base their reputation on years (and usually decades) in the business, The Tin Shed takes simply good, farm fresh food, and cooks it in a way that resembles something like home cooking meets gourmet.
Known for both BBQ and burgers, you can get a solid combination of the two between two buns.
From a classic pulled pork sandwich to what some have described as the "best burger of their life" The Tin Farm might have a small, sometimes limited menu, but there's really not much thinking needed here. Go for a BBQ sandwich or a classic burger, hey, you can even try both together.
Everything you'll find here is locally sourced and farmed.
You can taste the freshness in the dishes and the skill in the preparation. While many go with BBQ, the pork belly sandwich is also a crowd pleaser. It comes topped with fresh greens, tomatoes, and pickled onions.
There's also a variety of soups, salads and daily specials.
From a scrumptious flatbread to a crisp green salad topped with oysters and served with shiitake mushroom soup on the side - the menu is small but you might have a hard time deciding just what to get.
I think it's safe to say The Tin Shed might very well boom with popularity in the next year.
A hole-in-the-wall this good (and new) certainly can't stay a secret for long. As a stop-by spot for many traveling through the mountains, keep this restaurant on your radar next time you find yourself in the western region of the state. While plenty of restaurants in North Carolina achieve celebrity status, this is an underdog that deserves every farm-to-table rise to fame.
What neat little spot! Have you dined here before?
