It's no joke that pizza has hit national celebrity status. Once everyone came to terms with how much they really couldn't resist the cheesy, greasy, doughey goodness, we all banded together and decided yeah...we're proud to love pizza.

Pizza aficionados,  I used several sources, including Urban Spoon, making sure to only enter the restaurants with an overall rating above 95%. Taste buds don't lie!

1. Frank's Pizza and Subs, Newport

With a 100% approval rating on Urban Spoon, it seems the most delicious brick oven pizza hides behind an unassuming exterior.

2. Mimi's Dairy O Pizza and Grill, Rutherfordton

Make sure to pop in the window and grab a NY style slice on your next trip to Chimney Rock.

3. Lilly's Pizza, Raleigh

Located in historic five points, Lilly's has been satisfying local pizza lovers since 1993. Started in a former biker bar by three musicians, locals began to to frequent Lilly's for pizza to pet the four-legged friend Lilly herself. Hip, cool, and all organic, look at some art, hear some music, and eat some pizza!

4. Angelo's Pizza, Buxton

Next time you take a family vacation to Hatteras Island, make sure to stop by Angelo's. Yelp users have called it "quite literally the best pizza I've ever had." Also, you'll be on vacation, so a great excuse to treat yourself and indulge in some cheesy goodness! Bonus: there is an arcade for the kiddos.

5. Favilla's Pizza, Asheville

Voted #1 best speciality pizza in Asheville, Favilla's is a slice of NY-style heaven.

6. Pure Pizza, Charlotte

You can't go wrong with Pure Pizza. Farm fresh toppings accentuate the delicious crust. Located in the 7th Street Market on the edge of Uptown, you can grab a quick, yummy lunch then browse the unique stores in 7th St. Market.

7. Burke Street Pizza, Winston-Salem

While there are so many contenders for "best pizza" in Winston-Salem, I chose Burke because, well, its business hours. Yes, the NY style pizza is absolutely delicious. But, how about at 2AM on a Saturday night? I think you catch my gist.

8. Pizzeria Toro, Durham

Pizzeria Toro is not your run of the mill pizza joint. They challenge the cheesy norm with unique toppings and combinations. This wood-fired restaurant is a popular haven for college students.

9. Tony's Italian Restaurant and Pizza, Elizabeth City

Aside from being the "best pizza joint in town," Tony's also has an array of delicious Italian cuisine on the menu. How about some steamed mussels to go along with that Sicilian pizza? Mmm.

10. Pie on the Mountain, Lansing

Called the "best pizza in the high country" a long day of hiking totally deserves a delicious end!
