The first location, Big Daddy's Restaurant and Oyster Bar at Kure Beach was opened by the grandfather of the current owner Freddie Lancaster. His name was Tommy, but because he looked like Burl Ives from a movie that came out at the time, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, folks referred to him as one of the characters named "Big Daddy," and it stuck.
