The only location out of five, Big Daddy's of Lake Norman is the one remaining restaurant still owned by the Lancaster family. The first location, Big Daddy's Restaurant and Oyster Bar at Kure Beach was opened by the grandfather of the current owner Freddie Lancaster. His name was Tommy, but because he looked like Burl Ives from a movie that came out at the time, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, folks referred to him as one of the characters named "Big Daddy," and it stuck. The Lake Norman location opened in 1974 and is operated by Freddie and his wife, Susie, along with their two daughters and son-in-law. And how has this classic restaurant survived this long? The staff prides itself on keeping the quality and service at their best. Let's take a look at why we folks return to this eatery owned by the same family for years in North Carolina.
Big Daddy's is an unforgettable experience backed by decades of love that we feel as soon as we walk in.
The interior has a vintage vibe, complete with low lights, and whole fish hanging on the walls for decoration.
Belly up to the bar for an ice-cold beer or some freshly brewed iced tea with lemon.
Start off with an appetizer, such as Hot Crab Dip, Fried Lobster Tails (What??!), or a cup of New England Clam Chowder.
Oysters come fried, on the half-shell, and the fancy Oysters Rockefeller.
A bountiful salad bar is fresh with your favorite colorful toppings.
Steak and broiled dinners come with a trip to the salad bar or a cup of yummy soup. It can also be added to any meal.
Now this part gets a little tricky with 57 menu items.
And we're asked to order by the number beside the item to help mainstream the production line.
Steamed crab legs, lobsters, and steamed shrimp are all market-priced.
You might want to strongly consider one of the "Daddy Seafood" platters, coming in lil', big, and super for a crunchy, golden variety.
And for you landlubbers out there, don't despair as the cooks here make some premium oven-roasted prime rub, Filet Mignon, and chopped sirloin with a side of Au jus, and full or half-orders of juicy baby back ribs.
But a side of crab legs, lobster, shrimp, or chicken can accompany this too, or instead, try one of the fantastic sandwiches.
Even the key lime pie is made in the house, along with a few other luscious desserts.
We like the creamy cheesecake, too, and the three-layer chocolate cake is also a winner.
