Back in June, I wrote about the famous Britts Donuts. This Carolina Beach landmark has not only been deemed the best donut in North Carolina, but possibly America. Today, the article has over 11,000 shares, with many commenters expressing love and loyalty for this glazed, gooey goodness. But, what would the world be without a fun little donut competition? While Krispy Kreme is a beloved North Carolina icon, another donut shop might just rival the famous Britts. That donut shop is, of course, Duck Donuts.
Duck Donuts was opened by Pennsylvania native Russ DiGilio. Growing up, he spent his summers on the Outer Banks, and one day, had an ah-ha moment that hey, the OBX could really use an amazing donut shop. After spending 30 years in the healthcare industry, he decided to pursue (essentially on a whim) opening his own donut shop. Duck Donuts opened in 2007 with two locations, one at Kitty Hawk and the other at Kill Devil Hills. It didn't have immediate fame, but over time, word got out and before long, Duck Donuts became legendary. Unlike its competition, Duck Donuts doesn't just keep it simple with a glaze. The toppings are what make this perfectly cooked donut so amazing. Besides the toppings, it's also about what's on the inside, as the donuts are cooked with a cake-style batter instead of yeast.
Early in the morning, long lines form outside of the door. But many don't mind waiting, as the smell of dough mingles with the smell of salt in the air. People discuss which toppings they'll get, which donuts are their favorite, and some express excitement over their first time here.
Another frequent discussion topic is just how many donuts can be consumed. These donuts are HUGE and delicious. They come in simple flavors like chocolate with sprinkles, and even daring and delicious with bacon. You can custom order your donut - start with a coating, choose your topping, and add drizzle like blackberry or salted caramel. These made-to-order donuts are cream of the crop, no pun intended!
Although Duck Donuts had its humble beginning on the Outer Banks, the popularity and press led the shop to expand and open other locations. Most notably and recently, in Charlotte in the Dilworth neighborhood. You don't even have to live in North Carolina to have a Duck Donut - as there are stores from New Jersey to Florida.
One thing that makes Britts so special is that it's fundamental to a Carolina Beach vacation. You can only purchase these donuts there, and it makes your experience, the wait, and the taste that much more enjoyable. While Duck Donuts are certainly delicious, there are of course mixed feelings to be had about the expanding business, franchising, and - dare I say it - 'chain' atmosphere. But that's what happens when something is THIS good. It just must be shared.
To each their own, in terms of the donut, but needless to say, both of these donut shops are amazing in their own way. However, everyone has their favorite, and the question now is - which one is yours?
Both donut shops are, indeed, North Carolina landmarks, and both are totally necessary to the amazing cuisine that is found throughout the state. But, everyone has their favorite, and I can't wait to read your opinion! Do you LOVE Duck Donuts?
If you don't consider yourself a donut person, don't worry, there are other amazing desserts to be found in North Carolina. These 10 places have the most mouthwatering pie!
