When you think of a double decker bus, you most likely picture the busy streets of London, flooded with iconic red busses navigating people to and from their destinations. It's a worldly sight, and even more fun to ride in person. Luckily in North Carolina, you don't have to travel 'across the pond' to experience a double decker bus. And, hey, you can even grab coffee and a dessert in one.
What is now known as Double D's Coffee and Desserts had a humble beginning in Bristol, England and has lived quite a full life before stopping in Asheville and operating as a cafe.
The 1963 Lodekka model operated as a double deck bus in Bristol until the 70s, when it then found itself in strange and new territory in Atlanta. Aside from taking passengers to and from their destinations in Atlanta, it also gained the reputation as quite a party bus.
In 1999, the double decker bus found itself at 41 Biltmore Avenue and has operated as a coffee shop ever since. Seeing that Asheville is already a wildly unique town, a double decker cafe fits in perfectly with the eclectic vibe.
Every visitor is flooded with a different feeling when entering. Children love the idea of getting to eat on a double decker bus, almost like their favorite movie or game has come to life. Adults are flooded with nostalgia, and some say it's the first time they've ever been on a double decker bus. The interior is lavishly decorated but still retains its original charm. The upstairs can seat up to 25 people, but during the warmer months many love to sit on the outdoor patio.
Double D's serves a variety of your favorite coffee drinks, from espresso shots, lattes, and hot chocolates to iced coffee and non-coffee beverages. Aside from coffee, you can also grab desserts or baked goods.
In the warmer months the patio stays packed. It's dog friendly, and you might even catch some live music. While the patio is a great option, you can't beat the experience of catching a caffeine buzz in a unique slice of history!
Double D's is a must-stop when visiting Asheville or even just passing through - just remember to bring cash with you! Have you visited here before?
