Travel the back roads in North Carolina for even the shortest of distances and you'll likely discover hidden treasures around almost every turn. This is especially true when it comes to the tiny town of Bakersville (population: about 500). In addition to being a thriving and charming little artists enclave (there are loads of world-class galleries here), it's also home to a small town burger joint the locals have called a home away from home since the 1970s.
Beautiful Bakersville, the county seat of Mitchell County, is located 50 miles northeast of Asheville and 50 miles southeast of Boone.
It's a regular stop for art lovers from all over.
It's also considered North Carolina's gateway to Roan Mountain.
The main street leading through the town rolls all the way up the towering mountain. Roan Mountain isn't the tallest mountain in North Carolina but at 6,286 feet, it's close. It's also not wholly located in the Tar Heel State; the TN/NC state line rolls right over the mountain.
Over on the outskirts of the town proper, Bonnie and Clyde's drive-in has been dishing up delicious American fare since many of the town's people can remember.
Open since the 1970s, Bonnie and Clydes is literally one of those hidden treasures found just around the bend. (It's located in the midst of a significant turn in the road.)
A full menu with hearty choices for lunch, and dinner is available six days a week (it's closed on Sundays).
Regular specials are changed daily and include meatloaf, sandwiches, soups, appetizers (think wings), and desserts galore.
But anyone's first visit to Bonnie and Clydes should include one of their mouthwatering burgers with a side of crinkle cut fries.
If you bring your A-Game, then try the triple decker bacon cheeseburger with enough food to get you through the winter - if you were a bear preparing to hibernate.
But once you see the desserts you may rethink stuffing your face with their legendary giant burgers in favor of saving room for some sweet goodness at the end of your meal.
Don't be surprised if you arrive at Bonnie and Clydes and there's a line out the door of people waiting for a table.
The restaurant isn't huge but the food comes out fast and that wait is surely worth every minute.
Arrive at sundown and enjoy a gorgeous sunset while you dine or while you wait!
Have you discovered Bonne and Clydes Drive In in Bakersville? (Technically, it's in a community called Loafers Glory, but the mailing and GPS address is Bakersville.) You know when a restaurant has been in business for this long, it must be delicious - right??
Bonnie and Clydes Drive In is open six days a week: Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Learn more from the official Facebook page!
Address: 2660 NC-226, Bakersville, NC, 28705
