The city of Shelby, is located in the livermush county capital of America. Shelby is the county seat of Cleveland County — and the city takes its livermush seriously.
For the last 33 years, they've hosted one of two livermush festivals in the Tar Heel State. (The other one is in Marion.)
It's here that folks line up probably over and over again, on the third weekend each October, to devour, and then celebrate, the meaty substance.
North Carolina is home to, we believe, five livermush makers.
If you're new around here, livermush is made up of pig liver, head parts, and cornmeal (at least, according to Wikipedia). How it's spiced and seasoned is the KEY, along with how it's prepared and served.
There are a few restaurants in Shelby that stand out above the rest when it comes to livermush. Take a look below:1. The Shelby Cafe - 220 S Lafayette Street
Outside of the Livermush Festival, the number one place in Shelby (according to TripAdvisor.com) to get Livermush is at the Shelby Cafe. There are many ways to serve the delicacy, and if you've never had it on a stick, then you're missing out. Shelby Cafe is open Monday through Saturday from 6am to 8:30pm, and on Sunday from 6am to 3pm.
2. Sushi Dojo - 302 E Dixon Blvd
Oh yes. It's true (according to a reviewer on TripAdvisor.com), you can get a pretty tasty Livermush and Cream Cheese Sushi Roll at Sushi Dojo. They're open Sunday through Thursday from 11am-9pm, and Friday/Saturday from 11am-10pm.
3. The Pancake House - 149 W Dixon Blvd
The food at the Pancake House is always yummy and affordably priced. You can get your Livermush fix in several different ways at the local eatery. They're open from 6am-2pm seven days a week.
4. Ken & Mary's - 1628 S Dekalb St
If you love home cooking, then you'll love Ken & Mary's. Serving breakfast and lunch, this hometown eatery dishes up Livermush customers rave about. Ask for a specialty omelette - with the Livermush tucked neatly inside. They're open seven days a week, 6am-2pm.
