There's no denying North Carolina has tons of great restaurants and also TONS of history. With buildings dating back to the 18th century (and towns too) there's plenty to be found in terms of antiquated charm and great food. Combining two of my favorite subjects - food and history - these 12 restaurants have stood the test of time and have become staples not only in their cities or towns, but in North Carolina.

1. The Historic Harvey Mansion and Inn, New Bern

The Harvey Mansion dates back to 1804 and is one of the last remaining remnants of the thriving seaport New Bern once was. With so much history, it comes with plenty of folklore and haunts. Needless to say though, the food is amazing and the bar is perfect for a weekend excursion.

2. The Tavern in Old Salem, Winston-Salem

Located in the beautiful and historically rich Old Salem, The Tavern is a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Located in an 18th century building, the restaurant specializes in farm-to-fork American fare. Great for a delicious lunch or candlelit dinner.

3. Nana's, Durham

While the (amazing) restaurant itself only opened in 1992, it's the location that holds the history. Nana's is located in a former warehouse built in downtown Durham over 60 years ago. It's a reminder of what Durham once was and what it is becoming.

4. Bernardin's Restaurant at the Zevely House, Winston-Salem

Located in the beautiful and historic Zevely House, Bernardin's is upscale, elegant dining in a fabulous location. The gorgeous patio is perfect for warm spring and summer nights.

5. Tapoco River Grill, Tapoco Lodge

Located on the banks of the gorgeous Cheoah River, this delicious restaurant is located in a breathtaking and historic setting. The restaurant specializes in American fare like pizzas, burgers, etc...but with a fancy touch. This is great for a weekend getaway.

6. Canyon's Historic Restaurant, Blowing Rock

For nearly a century, travelers and locals have passed through Canyon's for a delicious meal with an absolutely breathtaking view.

7. The World Famous Open Kitchen, Charlotte

Open Kitchen has been family owned and operated since 1952. You can still experience all the 50's charm and try some of the best Italian you'll find in the QC.

8. Mecca Restaurant, Raleigh

Mecca Restaurant has been serving amazing southern comfort food in a cozy setting since the 1930s. In business this long...you know it's going to be good!

9. Dan'l Boone Inn and Restaurant, Boone

The Dan'l Boone Inn and Restaurant is located in one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Boone. For over fifty years, travelers and locals alike have enjoyed the homemade, southern comfort food served here. It's a must-stop if you haven't dined here before.

10. Liberty Oak Restaurant and Bar, Greensboro

Liberty Oak is located in a restored building that dates back to 1883 era. The patio is perfect for warm days and the interior brims with history.

11. Jolly Roger, Kill Devil Hills

Jolly Roger is the oldest Italian restaurant at the beach. It's packed with coastal charm, bright colors, interesting knick knacks, etc. A great place for spaghetti or fresh seafood!

12. The Roast Grill, Raleigh

Located in historic downtown Raleigh, the Roast Grill has been a Capitol City staple for generations. You'll have one of the best hot dogs of your life here.
