Confession : I'm addicted to caffeine. I can't start my day without a piping hot cup of coffee with cream and two sugars. Honestly, I don't understand how people don't drink coffee. The taste, the smell, the caffeine. But having a coffeemaker and going to a coffeehouse are two totally different experiences. As a freelance writer, my desk is usually at a local coffeehouse, but finding the perfect one can be a serious challenge.
Between atmosphere, beans, selections, and caffeine...these ten are the best in North Carolina.
1. Beyú Caffé, Durham
When you think coffee shop, Beyú is that quintessential image that comes to mind. The interior is a mix of bohemian and professional. Beyú offers delicious, piping hot coffee, a great brunch menu, and of course, live jazz music.
2. DeBeen Espresso, High Point
DeBeen is a quirky, cool coffeeshop you'll want to spend some time in. They offer the delicious house brew, plus other options from around the globe. You can catch some local artwork in their rotating display and even purchase pottery. Bonus, they make one the best iced vanilla chais ever!
3. Not Just Coffee, Charlotte
Located in the awesome 7th Street Market, this little coffee bar serves up some serious caffeine. They specialize in 'pourover' coffee, which involves boiling hot water, freshly ground beans, and a filter. The hot water is poured over the coffee for around four minutes and then your fresh brew is served right up. Sure, you'll have to wait but it's worth it. They also make some beautiful latte art. The 'coffee bar' is pretty packed on a weekend morning, but you can't beat the experience or the freshness of the coffee.
4. Green Sage Cafe, Asheville
It doesn't get much more Asheville than solar panels on the roof, but hey, anything goes in this city. Green Sage was voted as a local favorite for hangouts and organic coffee. I think it's safe to say Green Sage is the ideal environment to finish that novel you're working on. They also offer breakfast goodies, wraps and sandwiches.
5. Krankies, Winston-Salem
What originally started as a hip coffeehouse in a converted warehouse has grown into something completely different over the years. Of course, Krankies gained serious popularity offering a mellow coffeehouse by day and seriously fun concerts by night. Now, Krankies offers a full menu featuring breakfast options, sandwiches, and great desserts. There's also local artwork adorning the walls. Bonus, the baristas know what they're doing...your coffee is always hot and delicious.
6. The Green Bean, Greensboro
The Green Bean is a popular local spot for grabbing a cup o' joe, or a pint of beer and hanging out. They also have live music, pastries, and a beautiful outdoor area for nice days.
7. Jubala Village Coffee, Raleigh
Located in a cute building that could very well fit in on a Parisian corner, you'll find Jubala Village Coffee. The coffeehouse specializes in pourover coffee and makes all of their syrups from scratch. Another feature is the delicious waffles and assortment of breakfast items to start your day off right.
8. Cocoa Cinnamon, Durham
With a name like Cocoa Cinnamon, you know this coffeehouse is going to be totally hip and cool, but the modern vibe doesn't interrupt the delicious brews. Iced, hot, served up in a fun mug, the baristas know how to make a satisfying coffee, latte, and even 'sipping chocolate.'
9. Twin City Hive, Winston-Salem
Twin City Hive is so unique because while most coffeehouses source their beans from around the world, they source theirs from eight roasters in North Carolina. This local coffeehouse specializes in pourover coffee and offers a diverse range of chocolate treats.
10. Folks Cafe, Wilmington
Folks Cafe is probably the most down to earth coffeehouse on this list, but it doesn't take away from the quality of the beans and the experience. The owner roasts his own beans and offers various empanadas to accompany your beverage. Here, you won't find too many frills or unnecessary additions, but simply good coffee.
