It's inevitable that at one point or another you'll step foot outside of New York State, and when this sad day comes you'll quickly realize just how many of your favorite things can only be found back in your native neck of the woods. From your favorite drinks and savory dishes, this New York list of food items will remind you of just how good we have it here in the Empire State! Let's see how many of these things you're familiar with.
1. Freihofer's Cookies
There's nothing like coming home to an unopened box of Freihofer's cookies! The sweet treat is universally a favorite amongst our residents in the Capital District and Upstate areas.
2. Chicken Riggies
You'll find that there are quite a few restaurants in New York that can cook up some amazing chicken riggies, but most people outside of New York have sadly never heard of this dish. Made up of rigatoni, chicken and one-of-a-kind sauce, the dish is one that will keep your mouth watering.
3. Wegmans Subs and Sandwiches
Not every state is lucky enough to be able to go to the grocery store and pick up a sub and have it actually taste like something you'd want to go back and grab seconds of. At Wegmans, shoppers can find a variety of unique subs and sandwiches created here that will have you wondering how many visits to the grocery store in one day is too many?
4. Genesee Cream Ales
...Or Genesee anything! Crafted from the local Genesee Brewery in Rochester, these iconic green cans have been part of most of our upbringings in New York.
5. Spiedies
A Binghamton treat, a spiedie is simply a sandwich filled with cubes of meat that are marinated in a New York speciality marinade that you won't find anywhere else. This sandwich is so well-liked in our state, that Binghamton even hosts a spiedie festival and balloon rally each summer!
6. Wings
It's not like we aren't aware that wings exist outside of the state of New York, we're just saying that we can't say these so-called wings will ever be on a taste level that's as great as the wings New Yorkers have mastered making. Head out to specific areas like Buffalo and eat your way around the city to see what wings are really about.
7. White Hots
A specialty treat that can be enjoyed in quite a few of New York's regions, spots like Heid's of Liverpool have gotten our residents addicted to white hots. Similar to a hot dog, you'll find white hots are made up of meats like beef, pork and veal and taste absolutely amazing.
8. Sprague's Maple... Everything!
Sold all over New York, you'll find that everything tastes better when you add a little bit of Sprague's maple syrup to it! But this isn't the only locally made treat that this maple farm makes that we miss when we're far from home, we also can get a bit cranky if we go too long without one of their pieces of maple sugar or pancake mix.
9. Utica Greens
Out in Central New York you'll find that there's no lack in Italian restaurants! A favorite places all over Utica you can find restaurants serving up Utica greens, a dish that's full of flavor and an assortment of components that you'll love letting your taste buds figure out.
10. Pizza
This one doesn't really need much of an explanation. Eating pizza outside of the state of New York is just something that isn't worth wasting your time on. We do it best!
11. Beef on Weck Sandwiches
A sandwich primarily feasted on by our residents of Western New York, Beef on Weck sandwiches will make you question every other sandwich you've ever eaten before. Sitting on a kimmelweck roll that's straight out of your dreams and in between the rolls you'll find scrumptious roast beef.
12. Byrne Dairy
With so much beautiful farm land all around New York, it's no surprise that our residents prefer to drink local brands of milk like Byrne Dairy. The popular dairy brand is based out of Syracuse and is also known for their famous annual green milk that they produce for St. Paddy's Day!
13. Garbage Plates
When you mention garbage plates to anyone outside of New York, there's more than a good chance that what they're picturing in their mind isn't the same thing that we're talking about. A Rochester delicacy, garbage plates are made up of things like hamburger meat, hot dogs, home fries, baked beans, mustard, hot sauce and just about anything else your hungry heart desires.
14. Fish Fry
New York may not be the first coastal state that comes to mind when you think about destinations for grabbing outstanding fish fry, but you would be wrong to think that way! Waterfront destinations like Skaneateles are home to popular fish fry spots like Doug's Fish Fry, with other notable restaurants serving up fish fry around our state as well.
15. Brooks' BBQ Sauces
In a world where you can buy almost everything that you want with the click of a button, New Yorkers who find themselves far from home are lucky enough to have the option to shop at Brooks' House of BBQ's online store that's stocked with sauces, marinades, rubs and so much more.
16. Grape Pies
When you live in or around the small town of Naples, you get spoiled by growing up with unforgettably delicious grape pies right in your backyard. Spots like Monica's Pies and the annual Naples Grape Festival keep amazing grape pies flowing through town and we hate when we have to live without them!
17. Cider Donuts
Another treat that we know we can find out of state, cider donuts just don't taste the same when you aren't eating then while you're surrounded by beautiful New York scenery!
