Ghost stories have swirled around New Orleans for centuries. There are dozens of haunted tours that will take you around the city, exploring the city's paranormal side. This particular restaurant has only been around since 2001, but the building is much older. And as with any old building in the French Quarter, of course there's a ghost story that's attached to it. Located in the heart of Jackson Square in the French Quarter, Muriel’s has been delighting locals and tourists alike since 2001.
The building itself has a fascinating history. Jean Baptiste Destrehan purchased the land sometime between 1743 and 1762 and built a luxurious home for his family, complete with a drawing room, a music room, a ballroom, and five bedrooms.

Sadly, part of the home was burned in the Good Friday Fire in 1788.
It was after the fire that Pierre Antoine Leopardi Jourdan purchased the building and restored it to its original glory while simultaneously building the house of his dreams.
In 1814, Jourdan wagered his dream home in a poker game.
Unfortunately for Jourdan, he lost the hand and was going to have to give up his dream home. Faced with the crushing reality of having to move out of a home he dearly loved, he tragically committed suicide on the second floor.
Many believe Mr. Jourdan still resides here, even in the afterlife.
Over the years there have been countless unexplained experiences. Paranormal investigators have even come to Muriel's and have confirmed that there are spirits trapped within the walls.

The Seance Lounge tends to have the most activity.
While not seen as a full figure, he is often seen as a glimmer of light that’s seen darting through the lounge. Disembodied voices and knocking sounds are commonly heard in the area.
They’ve had so many paranormal encounters, Muriel’s even sets a table reserved for Mr. Jourdan.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. New Orleans is no stranger to the paranormal, that’s for sure. Our more than 300-year-old city comes with a ghostly tale or two from just about every building in the French Quarter. If you’re a believer in the spiritual realm, then you may want to pay a visit to Muriel’s Jackson Square, a haunted restaurant in New Orleans, for an unforgettable dining experience.

Located in historic Jackson Square, Muriel’s has been a popular French Quarter eatery since it opened in 2001.
The carriageway at Muriel’s dates back to the 1700s, and many believe that it was used to hold slaves when they came off the boats, leading many to think that there are still a few troubled spirits left to wander the carriageway.
One of the most popular spirits is that of Mr. Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan.
Mr. Jourdan purchased the property in the late 1700s after the Great New Orleans Fire destroyed many buildings in the area, including a portion of this particular mansion.
Jourdan spent the next few years building the home of his dreams.
Until one night in 1814 when he wagered his dream home in a poker bet. He lost the hand, and was faced with losing his home. Rather than see his beloved home in the hands of someone else, he tragically committed suicide in the home. It’s believed that he killed himself in the same area where the Seance Lounges are situated (pictured above).

So if you find yourself in this area and feel something you can’t explain, it might just be Mr. Jourdan checking in.
Patrons and employees have had many unexplained phenomena over the years.
Believing that Mr. Jourdan never left his dream home, the folks at Muriel’s welcome this old spirit and always keep a table reserved for Mr. Jourdan. You can even reserve the “ghost table” for yourself. Mr. Jourdan doesn’t seem to mind sharing the table.
