When it comes to king cakes, everyone has an opinion on who makes the best. You may be team Randazzo’s, team Gambino’s, or even team Rouses, but there’s a huge population of New Orleanians that will wait in line forever to get a king cake from Dong Phuong, and they’re worth the wait. Let’s check it out.
Located on Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans, Dong Phuong has been a favorite restaurant and bakery for over 30 years.
Part restaurant, part bakery, Dong Phuong is an ideal spot for lunch.
Their banh mi sandwiches might just be some of the best in the city.
Their lunch menu is chock full of authentic Vietnamese cuisine including several different types of pho, the perfect soup to warm you up when the temperatures drop.
And their bakery has some truly incredible asian desserts, pies, and pastries.
Not to mention their bread. They’re known for their signature breads. Their baked goods and breads alone are enough of a reason to venture out to this amazing spot. Stock up on pistolettes, coconut rolls, crescent rolls, and more.
But the star of the show at Dong Phuong are the king cakes.
People will wait hours to get their hands on one of these seasonal treats during Carnival season.
These king cakes are made with their signature flakey brioche dough, generous amounts of cinnamon and sugar and their homemade cream cheese frosting.
And they offer several different flavors.
You can go with traditional, or you can jazz it up with one of their fillings like cream cheese, pecan strawberry, coconut, or almond creme.
If you don’t pre-order yours, you’ll want to get there early, because they will sell out! But after just one bite, you’ll know it was worth the wait.
