When traveling along the historic Route 66, three things are certain: gas stations, diners, and the unexpected. It's not too often you hit a trifecta by finding all three in the same location but there is one spot right here in New Mexico that takes up this challenge.
Welcome to the wonderfully unique Standard Diner, which just happens to be anything but standard.
Since 2006, it has been serving modern versions of the classic comfort foods typically found in diners on Route 66 and across America.
The diner is located inside a former Texaco gas station and General tire shop, which opened its doors back in 1938.
These days, aside from small mementos scattered around the restaurant, you won't find much of its oily, grungy roots. However, the architecture and interior design here are stunning.
A simplified version of the 1930s Art Deco style still lingers here and it feels decadent once again with the stylized interior design.
As for the food, expect everything to be an elevated version of your favorite diner fare, whether you're stopping by for breakfast...

...or savoring a diner dinner staple.
This is a bacon-wrapped meatloaf served alongside creamy mashed potatoes, a rich red wine sauce, and veggies.
Be sure to chase that food with a refreshing drink!
The diner has 12 local craft beers on tap plus a long list of cocktails.
Finally, finish your meal with a sweet and satisfying dessert made in-house.
Keep it simple with a slice of cake or pie. Or go all out with a perfectly crafted crème brûlée or a hefty milkshake.
