If you know anything about New Mexicans, they love their chilies! The red... the green... it doesn't matter. They are as much of a staple food as pasta is for Italian fare, rice is for Asian dishes, and hummus is for Mediterranean dining. And the city of Hatch is definitely the authentic place to get them. But they are available all over the state. So whether you live in The Land of Enchantment or are just passing through, here are some fantastic ways to enjoy chile season in New Mexico.
1. The first and most obvious option: bring home a box or three of chiles and roast those bad boys yourself.
There's no experience quite like smelling chile roasting in the fresh New Mexico morning air and this is one of the easiest things you can do at home.
2. Grab a green chile cheeseburger at your favorite burger joint.
Can you think of a more classically American way of enjoying that fiery flavor of green chile than topped on a juicy burger? Make one at home, grab a quick meal at fast food locations like Blake's Lotaburger, or enjoy a fancier version from a sit-down burger restaurant.
3. Enjoy a freshly fried chile relleno filled with gooey cheese.
Since we're in peak chile season and a relleno is best made with fresh chiles, get ready to dip those cheese-filled chiles in an egg batter for an unbelievable Mexican food tasting experience.
4. Or enjoy chilly treat with the green chile frozen custard at Caliche's.
Surprisingly sweet and easy on the heat, this favorite New Mexico custard offers a phenomenal tasting experience with their green chile marmalade.
5. Pick up a frozen WisePies green chile pizza at your local grocery store.
Is there a better way to enjoy pizza? I think not! The popular Albuquerque-based pizza joint started selling a select stock of their pizzas in local Smith's, Albertson's, and City Markets.
6. Sip a craft green chile cerveza from the Sierra Blanca Brewing Company.
Steeped with home-roasted green chile, this New Mexico beer highlights the smokey and crisp chile flavors with just a hint of heat and low alcohol content.
7. Take home a bottle of Hatch Green Chile wine from St. Clair Winery.
This combination sounds just plain odd, but you'll end up with a glass of bold yet smooth New Mexico wine.
8. Hit the road for a trip on the Las Cruces Walk of Flame Green Chile Trail.
