Buffett’s Candies is an Albuquerque institution. Most Duke City residents have driven by the gigantic candy cane on Lomas Boulevard at one time or another. This sweet piece of kitsch directs you to a family-run candy store that has been in business since 1956.
Stepping inside Buffett’s is like entering your grandma’s home – assuming she were a diehard chocoholic with a penchant for piñon nuts. The staff are extremely friendly and pass out chocolate samples. Staring at the red and white décor, glass jars, and sweet treats galore won’t just make you feel like a kid again. It’ll make you feel like a kid in the 1950s.
Buffett’s is known for crafting to-die-for piñon nut candy. It takes 75 years for a piñon pines to produce a large-scale crop of nuts, which is one of the reasons why this nut is so valued. Another reason is its smooth, nutty taste which - as all New Mexicans know – makes it superior to the average pine nut.
Now imagine these nuts embedded in a caramel log with a brown sugar center and you have Buffett’s piñon rolls. Piñons also star in the store’s caramels, chocolate horny toads, toffee, clusters, and brittle.
Brittles are available in a variety of flavors, ranging from green chile peanut brittle to pecan brittle that is sourced from pecan growers in Las Cruces.
Unlike many candy stores, Buffett’s doesn’t use any preservatives in their products. As a result, their motto is: "our candy is made to eat – not to keep!" No wonder this establishment has won a Best in the City Award from "Albuquerque The Magazine."
The man behind the store, George Buffett, is no longer with us but his children continue his legacy, making this business a true family affair.
