The Gatherin’ Place is a self-proclaimed "old-fashioned pie café" that serves amazing New Mexico food. Plus, it displays and sells local artisan crafts and gifts. With daily-made fresh pies, a comfortable atmosphere, and piping hot coffee, the Gatherin’ Place is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Take a look at this charming eatery way out in the boonies but, oh, so worth it.
Pie Town, an unincorporated community along U.S. Highway 60 in Catron County, has a population of 168.
But, of course, this is THE place for pies, pies, pies galore. There are several different types of blueberry pies alone: blueberry, blueberry with pecan crumble, and the very popular blueberry butterscotch.

While New Mexico and barbecue are not generally synonymous in the minds of most, many who have tried it report that Watson's is not only some of the best barbecue in The Land of Enchantment, but that it very well may be some of the best barbecue in the nation. Who would ever think that barbecue this good would be found in New Mexico? People who are in the know come from miles around and beyond to indulge in Watson's brisket, ham, pulled pork, spare ribs, turkey, and more.
Watson's BBQ has been serving up tasty, wood-fired, smoked meats and sides since 1980. This restaurant has been recognized by local and national media sources for decades - and with good reason. It's just a few blocks off historic Route 66, so if you're touring that route, it's a crucial stop along the way.
This establishment offers dine-in or takeout. If you choose to eat onsite at Watson's BBQ, you can choose from limited seating indoors or you can sit on the outdoor, covered patio. Most patrons select a plate of one, two, three, or four smoked meats with two sides - the potato salad, coleslaw, pinto beans, mac and cheese are all excellent additions to any meal - and all plates come with bread and a cookie, too.
The other options at Watson's BBQ are great, too. Barbecue sandwiches are quite popular at Watson's; you can buy a standalone sandwich with a meat of your choice, a "buckey sandwich" with brisket and sausage, or a "pigwich" made of pork and sausage. You can make any of these a "sandwich plate" meal which comes with onions, pickles, two sides, and a cookie for a complete meal.
Are you looking for something a little different? Whether you order a Po-Boy Sandwich with brisket or pulled pork, a Smoke House Burger, or an Old School Frito Pie, you're sure to be pleased. Or, if something a little healthier is what you desire, you might order yourself a Smoke House Salad. It's a regular salad topped with your choice of smoked meat - so you'll get your fill of vegetables, but you also won't feel like you're missing out on Watson's incredible barbecue!
How about this stuffed baked potato? This is elevated barbecue at its finest. The one pictured above is stuffed with barbecue turkey and is then smothered with cheese and barbecue sauce. Wow!
All in all, Watson's BBQ is epic, and it's a barbecue restaurant that every barbecue lover should try. It's open from Tuesday through Saturday, and it's only open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or "until the boss gets tired," so plan accordingly. You certainly don't want to drive all the way to Tucumcari and then miss out.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
