Some foods are New Mexico traditions; among them, tamales. They are excellent for a meal and handy for a quick snack. Plus, what would the holiday table be without them? Saying who makes the best tamales is highly contested, but we found one tiny restaurant in northern New Mexico that deserves a second look -- Teresa's Tamales.
Folks flock here for tamales
If you have ever needed a reason to visit Cleveland, New Mexico, Teresa's Tamales is it. As well as a steady stream of local patrons, those in the know drive hundreds of miles for these famed tamales. Even a few celebrities have dropped by to try the best tamales around.
Don't blink or you will miss it!
The tiny restaurant is right off the main road, but if you're not watching for it, you will drive right on by. It's not fast food and the furnishings aren't fancy, but with the friendly, laid-back vibe you won't mind waiting for your food to be cooked fresh to order.
Tamales meet tradition
Like many New Mexicans, proprietor, Teresa Olivas grew up making tamales. She started at age six, working (production-line style) alongside her brothers and sisters when it was time for the family to make tamales. Even then, Teresa knew tamales were her calling.
Get handmade happiness in a husk
Simple, good ingredients are the backbone of the tamales. The masa just gets salt, water, and a hint of garlic. The insides, though, are where these tamales shine with flavor. Served as singles or on a plate, they come topped with your choice of flavorful chile and fresh garnish.
If you need something to go with your tamales...
The menu is short but it has everything you need, including breakfast. Aside from tamales and breakfast burritos, look for other New Mexican favorites like tacos, rellenos, and burritos (try the chicharones). Teresa's has a respectable burger too.
Judge for yourself.
As we mentioned, we know that claiming anything is "the best" is up for debate, so take a road trip and try these tamales for yourself. Find Teresa's Tamales at 3296 New Mexico 518, in Cleveland. Coming from Las Vegas, look for it about four miles before Mora, at Mile Marker 33. They are closed Sundays.
