New Mexico just had two major burger cook-offs featuring the Land of Enchantment's own green chile cheeseburgers - the Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge at the New Mexico State Fair and The Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown, produced by Edible magazine.
A dozen cooks from around the state vied at the State Fair and four local celebrity judges picked the winners. Fair visitors also voted on a people's choice favorite. At the Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown, seven state-wide finalists (chosen by online vote from a field of 15), faced seven judges, all from the food industry. Smackdown diners also picked a people's favorite too.
And the winners are....
State Fair 3rd Place - Oak Tree Cafe (Albuquerque)
Oak Tree Cafe is a beer and burger joint in Albuquerque. Their house green chile cheeseburger is a half-pound of fresh beef topped with green chili, cheddar cheese, red onion, lettuce, and tomatoes. They have "Janet's" bacon green chili burger too. It comes with pepper-jack instead of cheddar, plus hickory smoked bacon. Find Oak Tree Cafe in Albuquerque at 4545 Alameda Boulevard, Northeast.
State Fair 2nd Place - Fuddruckers (Albuquerque)
The Albuquerque Fuddruckers chain is no stranger to the state fair challenge, even taking home top honors in previous years. There are four Fuddruckers in New Mexico; one in Farmington and three in Albuquerque.
State Fair Champ - Sparky's (Hatch)
Long-time New Mexico favorite, Sparky's finally took the big burger prize at the fair. In previous attempts, Sparky's has taken home 2nd place and People’s Choice, but this is their first big win. As well as top-notch burgers, the whimsical restaurant in Hatch has become a roadside attraction. Find them at 15 Franklin Street.
State Fair People's Choice - Oso Grill (Capitan)
Oso Grill got the people’s vote. Their green chile cheeseburger featured an extra shot of heat, with chopped chile and fried green chile strips. Oso Grill is a fairly new addition to New Mexico's burger scene, only opening in 2015. The fair challenge was the restaurant’s first foray into competition cooking. Their Smackdown entry – and the people's choice winner – was a burger with green chile, caramelized onions, cheddar, romaine, mushrooms, and a secret sauce. Check the Street Food Institute's Facebook page to find out when and where to try their winning burger.
So, that's what the judges had to say. Now it's your turn. Which of these burgers have you had and which are the best?
