Who doesn’t like BBQ? It is the quintessential comfort food for much of the southern and southwest U.S. (think Texas, Kansas City, and Memphis). New Mexico certainly has its share of delicious BBQ joints too. If it’s BBQ sandwiches you are seeking, here are the eight best across the state.
1. Stack House BBQ (Rio Rancho)
This amazing BBQ joint is located at 4000 Barbara Loop and is truly a hidden gem with delicious, authentic BBQ, great prices, and super friendly service.
The Triple Stack Sandwich with BBQ brisket, pork, and jalapeno sausage is topped with slaw and BBQ sauce and served atop a Hoagie roll. This sandwich is so amazing it will be featured on the Food Network’s popular program Carnival Eats in 2018. You’ve got to try this!
2. MAD Jack’s Mountaintop Barbecue (Cloudcroft)
MAD Jack’s is located at 105 James Canyon Highway and, wow, would you look at the line! This is one tremendously popular and delicious BBQ joint that you must add to your bucket list.
Their amazing sandwich is the "Chile the Kid." This epically delicious BBQ sandwich features chopped brisket with grilled New Mexican green chiles (of course, right?!) heaped atop a fresh, toasted sweet sourdough bun imported from Texas. Yum!
3. Sparky’s BBQ and Espresso (Hatch)
Located at 115 Franklin Street, this quirky BBQ restaurant is truly eclectic and oh-so yummy!
The magnificent Oinker Sandwich consists of delicious BBQ pulled pork served atop Sparky’s world-famous green chile cheeseburger. After all, for a restaurant in the green chile capital of the world, there must be chiles! Trust me, your taste buds will explode.
4. Black Betty BBQ (Roswell)
This Texas-style BBQ food truck is located at 620 N. Main Street. Absolutely everything on the menu is fantastic.
Black Betty’s signature sandwich is the Porker. This bad boy is chock full of smoked ham, fried bologna, smoked sausage, and pulled pork atop a bun, topped with their homemade whiskey mustard BBQ sauce, and served with their famous ribbon fries and a spicy pickle. Holy cow, er, pig!
5. Peppers Ole Fashion BBQ (Albuquerque)
You can find Peppers at 303 San Pedro Drive NE. This little hole-in-the-wall eatery has a chalkboard menu and is cash only, but oh my goodness, the food, service, and staff are beyond amazing, and coupled with the blues music and magnificent aroma, you will come back time and again.
Everything on the menu is great, especially the sides; however, for a truly epic BBQ sandwich, try the chopped pork. If this doesn’t make your mouth water, then I don’t know what will. The brisket sandwich is also amazingly delicious.
6. Watson’s BBQ (Tucumcari)
This cute little BBQ joint is located at 502 Lake Street in the Tucumcari Ranch Supply Old Fashioned Town & Country Store and has some of the best BBQ in the entire state.
The pulled pork sandwich is quite the hit: tender and flavorful (and served with a homemade cookie.) You can’t go wrong with this sandwich—or anything else at this delightful and delectable eatery.
7. Mr. Powdrell’s Barbecue (Albuquerque)
Mr. Powdrell’s has two locations in Albuquerque: 5209 4th Street NW and 11301 Central Avenue NE. For over 50 years, the Powdrell family has shared their passion for exceptional slow-smoked open-pit hickory BBQ, and every bite attests to this impressive legacy.
If you are a BBQ brisket fan, Mr. Powdrell’s brisket sandwich is truly da bomb! The BBQ pulled chicken sandwich is also tasty.
8. Hail’s Holy Smoked BBQ & More (Angel Fire)
This family-owned and operated Texas-style BBQ eatery is located at 3400 Mountain View Boulevard.
Hail’s smoked meat sandwiches are truly fabulous. You can choose among brisket (pictured), sausage, pork, and turkey, and all are tremendous! The "& More" is also wonderful, especially the Smokin’ Frito Pie—their take on the classic New Mexican favorite.
