New Jersey is home to magnificent mountains, rushing rivers, picturesque parks, and most importantly, delicious desserts. I must admit, I have quite the sweet tooth. I wanted to include EVERY dessert in the state on this list, but I decided to settle on the most unique. The following all stand out for various reasons including fantastic flavors, massive portions and curious combinations.
1. Wukong Sundae, Cafe Archetypus, Edgewater
I've heard that all of the desserts here are incredible, but the Wukong Sundae is probably the most unique. It includes warm brownies, chocolate and banana ice cream, hot fudge, marshmallows and nuts. While you're indulging in your dessert, enjoy the unique interior - intimate and artistic, it is designed to make you feel as though you are in a cave.
2. Fresh Cream Fudge, Douglass Fudge, Wildwood
Their homemade fudge is some of the best in the state, and unique for its creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture. They also offer chocolate covered taffy, an interesting combination.
3. Maple Bacon Donut, Montclair Bread Company, Montclair
Every donut here is delicious, but the Maple Bacon is a fan favorite.
4. Caramel Corn, Johnson's Popcorn, Ocean City
This boardwalk staple has been in business for 75 years, and it's no surprise why. Their famous caramel corn is a perfect mix of savory and sweet - an ideal treat! Enjoy 3 Ocean City locations, along with an outpost in Wildwood.
5. Knafeh, Nayef's Sweet, Paterson
This Middle Eastern cheese pastry is soaked in syrup and so delicious!
6. Pumpkin Cheese-filled Coffee Cake, The Dessert Plate, Somerville
This unique flavor combination is only offered as a seasonal treat, but all of the homemade baked goods at this shop are scrumptious. The triple ginger cookie is a favorite!
7. Boston Creme Cupcake, Sweet Avenue Bake Shop, Rutherford
What's better than a Boston Cream Donut? A Boston Cream Cupcake, of course. The best part of this Ganache-dipped dessert? You can't even tell that it's vegan!
8. Italian Pastries, Palazzone 1960, Wayne
Which pastry? Any! Reviewers say that they are all amazing, and the most authentic Italian desserts outside of Italy.
9. Cookies & Cream Waffle Sundae, Whipped Creperie, Red Bank
Someone once said, "Love is a warm waffle, slathered in ice cream and cookies." That someone may have been me.
10. Topzels, The Candy Jar, Collingswood
Pretzels dipped in chocolate and covered in candy? Yes please, I'll take a dozen. Yelp reviewer Shaelene L. said "you will cry tears of joy over these pretzels!"
11. Jersey Monster, Hoffman's, Point Pleasant Beach
A Jersey Shore staple, Hoffman's is a local favorite that can attract quite a crowd. If you're looking for a unique flavor, try Jersey Monkey. Not pictured, this creative concoction includes banana ice cream, peanut butter, and chocolate chips.
12. S'mores Macaroons, Asalt & Buttery, Caldwell
This uniquely named bakery offers a variety of macaroon flavors including Pistachio, Lavender Honey, and Black Currant. A fan favorite is the S'mores flavor, not pictured. Whatever flavor you try, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Have you tried any of these one-of-a-kind desserts? Are you excited to try any? What other unique desserts in New Jersey would you add to this list?
