New Jersey was one of the first states to join the Union, and it's no surprise that there is a ton of history in the Garden State - including in its restaurants. Many of our oldest restaurants, taverns, and pubs have been standing since the days of the American Revolution - or even before! That's the case for The Clinton House, a historic restaurant in New Jersey housed in what was once an inn and public house. The bedrooms are no longer for rent, but the old-school dining room is still open for diners - and its food is anything but old and tired! Many of the entrees have been there since the restaurant was founded in 1743, while others have been added to the menu over the years, but they all have one thing in common - they're packed with flavor in an unforgettable environment.
The Clinton House has been standing tall for well over 250 years, originally starting its life as an inn and public house that was the heart of the town.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. It's not a working inn anymore, but it remains the most iconic restaurant in Clinton.
The indoor dining room has been given a makeover, but it still retains much of its classic flair from previous incarnations.
You'll find many old-school dishes still on the menu, including Beef Wellington - and the restaurant's famous Crab Au Gratin, its most famous appetizer.
The entrees trend towards the classic and hearty, with steak and seafood always on offer.
However, a lot of modern flairs have made their way onto the menu, and The Clinton House is now known for having the best lobster risotto in New Jersey.
The impressive wine program is also a highlight, and many people take advantage of the regular recommended wine pairings with their meals.
For dessert, you can choose from any number of modern decadent treats - or you can go old-school with the restaurant's popular baked Apple Dumpling.
