There are literally hundreds of incredible restaurants in New Jersey. Some offer fine dining while others offer a unique experience and others still serve up the best slice of pizza around. Where does one start? I've compiled a list of favorites, sure to mix up your culinary routine. From casual to gourmet, each is worth a visit.

1. Rat's Restaurant

The atmosphere alone is enough reason to visit this romantic French restaurant, but the food is fantastic, as well. Located in the most spectacular setting, the restaurant is surrounded by a pond, waterfall and outdoor sculpture park. Modeled after a Matisse painting, Rat's is a work of art. 2. The Pop Shop

This classic soda shop has a menu loaded with modern takes on your comfort food favorites. The variety is outstanding, and you definitely don't want to miss the desserts or grilled cheese (rated among the best in New Jersey). This is a great place for family fun as they often host events for kids like the upcoming Mad Science Workshop. (1/10 in Medford or 1/19 in Collingswood). The cost is $25 per child and includes a dinner buffet, drinks, dessert, tax, tip and 1-hour workshop. Adult caregivers are free and can order off the a la carte menu if they wish. Address: 1 S. 3. Restaurant Nicholas

If you're looking for a gourmet meal, Restaurant Nicholas has you covered. It is consistently ranked among the best restaurants in New Jersey and offers expertly crafted multi-course menus. 4. Rod's Steak & Seafood Grille

This swanky spot offers a unique dining experience in addition to delicious American cuisine. Patrons are afforded the opportunity to dine in a restored train car, though the main dining room isn't too shabby either. Address: 1 Convent Road, Morristown

5. The Walpack Inn

This remote restaurant is a true hidden gem. Dine in a greenhouse and score incredible views of Sussex County. You'll often spot wildlife while enjoying their amazing bread. Address: 7 National Park Service Road 615, Wallpack Center

6. Benny's Luncheonette

The photos don't do this strip mall spot justice, so you'll have to check it out for yourself. The luncheonette and neighboring bakery & ice cream shop are absolutely amazing. As far as food goes, try the overstuffed pastrami sandwich. For dessert, try a crazy shake - filled to the brim with sweets. Come once and you'll be a regular in no time. 7. The Chicken Or The Egg

This seasonal shore eatery has amassed a cult following of sorts .(They even sell merchandise for their loyal Chegg Army.) They're one of the best breakfast spots in the state (served all day!) and the wings are fiery and fantastic. Their Ludicrous Wing Challenge has been featured on Man vs Food, but they've got a flavor for everyone. Address: 205 N. Bay Avenue, Beach Haven

8. Star Tavern

This local favorite offers Italian food and incredible sodas, but it's famous for its thin crust pizza. It has scored numerous awards and accolades for its perfect crust to cheese ratio. There's a wonderful wine and beer selection and the pie is also available for takeout. Address: 400 High Street, Orange

9. The Lobster House

This shorefront seafood spot has several dining areas - one of which is on a docked schooner. The food and the views are both spectacular. They've got a full service fish market in season and everything is fresh and flavorful. Address: 906 Schellengers Landing Road, Cape May

10. Archetypus Cafe

This dimly lit spot is inspired by caverns and the seasonal outdoor bamboo garden is equally as amazing as the interior. To top it all off, the desserts here are fantastic. Bring a date, and share the Wukong Sundae - try for a coveted booth if you can get one. Address: 266 River Road, Edgewater

11. Browns Restaurant

See the crowd on the Boardwalk? That massive line is for the donuts. Opened in 1976, this business is now owned by the second generation of the Brown family. Serving more than magnificent donuts, you can enjoy breakfast and lunch here, or an early dinner. Address: 110 Boardwalk, Ocean City

12. Battello

One of the best spots for NYC views, Battello serves lunch, brunch, dinner, and a light bar menu. You'll find Italian fare here, but if you prefer American cuisine, check out their sister restaurant, The Kitchen Step. The same executive chef (Ryan DePersio) is behind both culinary gems.
