New Jersey is quite the hot dog hot spot, serving up some of the best hot dogs in the country. We’re home to unique styles including the Italian hot dog (with peppers, onions, potatoes, and pizza bread) and the iconic Ripper (deep fried and delicious). We’ve also got some legendary dog joints (Dickie Dee’s, Maui’s Dog House, The Hot Grill, Jimmy Buff’s, Rutt’s Hut, Hiram’s…). Everyone has a favorite but today, we’re going to talk about the new(er) kid on the block...
Destination Dogs, opened in 2013, is so much more than a restaurant. Featuring flavors inspired by local and international cuisines, this eatery is truly a (you know I have to say it...) destination. Wherever you are in New Jersey, it's worth a trip.
They have the most incredible selection of hot dogs and sausages, with unique meats and toppings.
You'll find creative concoctions including Trenton Thunder (a deep fried all beef dog with pork roll, scrambled egg, cheese sauce, tomato, and pepper jelly) and Swede Dreams (bratwurst with gravy, mashed potatoes, and lingonberry jam).
Yum! Maybe One Bite In Bangkok (python sausage, cucumber salad, pepper jelly, crushed peanuts, and cilantro) or The Paul Bunyan (breakfast sausage with fried potatoes, bacon, and maple syrup, topped with a fried egg) is more your style?
While the menu options are abundant, you can also create the dog of your dreams. Meats include duck, lamb, python, chicken, wild boar, spicy chorizo and more. There's even a vegetarian dog.
Toppings include everything from spicy mayo to scallions, tomatoes to avocado and fried eggs to bacon. Want something with your delicious dog? You'll find a sampling of sides including wings, pretzels and their famed patatas ridiculas.
You'll also delight in their one-of-a-kind specials like "The Wildflower," in honor of the late Tom Petty's birthday. It's a shrimp and gator sausage topped with field greens, passion fruit vinaigrette, coleslaw and an edible wildflower. You never know what you'll find!
There's also a full bar with a sizable selection of beer (bottles, cans, tap), cocktails and even homemade sodas. The game room is an added bonus - you'll never be bored.
Celebrating Lent? Try the Vegetarian Conquistadog or The Vegan Oscar, or sub the vegan Italian sausage on a dog of your choice! A fun time for any foodie, Destination Dogs is definitely worth a visit. You can find it at 101 Paterson Street, New Brunswick. You can check out the full menu here.
