Sure, fancy burger places have proliferated around New Hampshire over the last few years - and they're delicious. Even so, there's something particularly nostalgic and comforting about a classic, no-frills diner burger. Sometimes you don't want any microgreens or artisanal cheese, you just want good old-fashioned patty on a bun. There's one place in Portsmouth that has perfected that art form - have you visited?
Gilley's Diner has a long history in Portsmouth. It started as a lunch cart in 1940, before moving permanently to its current location in 1974.
Stepping inside is like going back in time. There are no frills here - the burgers are served on paper plates - just the best darn comfort food you can find.
They do the classic burger (or double cheeseburger if you're hungry!) right - fresh hand-formed patties, simple toppings, perfectly cooked.
If you do want a little extra something, try the double chili cheese burger - it'll blow your mind.
Of course, it would be a sacrilege to get one of their burgers without enjoying some of their hand cut fries as well.
Their hot dogs are awfully good too - you may not be able to resist adding one to your order.
If you want to upgrade your side, get an order of poutine or the chili cheese fries.
After you gobble down your burger, don't forget to wrap up your meal with a little sweet something! Their hand-baked cookies and desserts are always changing and always delicious.
When you get your bill you'll be in for a pleasant surprise - no $15 burgers to be found here! The prices are incredibly reasonable.
You'll find Gilley's at 175 Fleet St Portsmouth, NH 03801.
