There's something fun about stumbling upon something that feels like a secret. Whether it's a hidden trail deep within the woods or a new restaurant that you're the first to try, the act of discovering can be deeply satisfying. That's why we love this spot in Nashua. It hearkens back to a different era and if you're not looking closely you might not realize it's a bar at all!
If you were walking down the street, you might think that Codex is simply a used bookstore. There are dusty-looking books lining the windows and it has a distinctly old-timey feel even from the outside.
But take a peek inside (via the secret side door on Elm Street!) and you'll find a bar that hearkens back to a time when booze was illegal - but that didn't mean it wasn't served.
Just like it might have been during Prohibition in the 1920s, you'll first see a giant bookcase. But just beyond that there's an entrance revealing the bar area.
While there are surely bars in America that have a 1920s theme, few of them dedicate themselves so fully to recreating a true 1920s experience.
They carry a wide variety of old-fashioned drinks all served in glassware reminiscent of the time. Think Old-Fashioneds and Manhattans.
In addition to well-known vintage drinks, they also have a large cocktail menu featuring their own creations.
Try a Coffee and Cigarettes with house infused espresso vodka and fernet.
You might expect this bar to place their focus on drinks, but their food menu is top-notch as well.
And each course is separated into thematically perfect categories such as "prologue" for appetizers, "chapters" for main dishes and "epilogue" for desserts.
There are so many secret little corners of this place that half the fun is just exploring. And, all the books are for sale!
This is a great place to come with a group, but if you're looking for some alone time get yourself a seat at the bar and pretend you're actually in the 20s!
