During Prohibition-era America alcohol was illegal, making it pretty difficult to enjoy a cold-one at the end of a long day like some of us can today. But, humans are inventive and we found a way! Speakeasies offered a place to drink — if you could find them! Also referred to as a blind pig or blind tiger, these spots helped thirsty Americans get through the hard times, one illicit drink at a time. Today, they're a popular way to remember what life was like back in the 1920s, while also helping us feel a little bit risky! Experience your own version of this at one of our favorite spots in Nashua!
Chuck's BARbership in Concord certainly looks like a barbershop should. With its barber's pole outside, you might be inclined to go check it out for a trim.
But what you'll find inside doesn't include scissors or barber's chairs.
Inside the vibe is that of a 1920s speakeasy, complete with Prohibition-era drinks and their matching glasses.
The most important thing about a speakeasy is that it exists undetected except by those in-the-know. And the vibe inside is definitely secretive.
But not all barbershop elements are lost once you're inside. Just in case the wrong people come poking around, it could pass as a place to get a haircut.
But, you'll probably be pretty focused on the drink menu that includes all sorts of 1920s-themed names.
And, of course, you can still get a beer, wine or cocktail of today.
If you're hungry, they have a wonderful farm-to-table menu.
That means you could quietly slip into this place with friends for dinner and stay all night. And you can assume everyone outside just thinks you're just getting a haircut!
Chuck's BARbershop is open Tuesday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. They're closed on Sunday and Monday. You can learn more about them on Facebook. You can give them a call on 603-856-7520.
Another unique throwback spot is this one-of-a-kind library restaurant in New Hampshire. It's a book lover's dream come true!
