Small town Fernley is home to one of the most delicious homemade ice cream shops in all of Nevada—Steve's Homemade Ice Cream. Owner-operator Steve Cordes got his start working in a famous small Staten Island, New York soda shop that dates back to 1933. This is where he learned to make ice cream. Following employment as a police officer, Cordes returned and managed the soda shop for 12 years before moving to Nevada to open his own place that has become quite a hit in northern Nevada.
Located in Lyon County, Fernley is a small town east of the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. As of 2010, the town had just fewer than 19,400 residents and an area of 128.8 square miles.
Fernley is the home to Steve's Homemade Ice Cream, located at 1360 US Hwy 95A N., Ste. 5. Cordes is in the shop everyday from open to close and also employs a small staff of local high school students. Both the product and the service earn consistently high marks.
Cordes makes all of his ice cream right on the premises and is responsible for deciding which flavors to create. He also takes suggestions from customers and tries to make seasonal flavors like pumpkin, eggnog, peach, cake batter, and coconut. He also has a large selection of Italian ices for spring and summer and makes a nonfat, no-sugar-added soft-serve frozen yogurt.
Steve's also makes and sells a variety of ice cream cakes, ice cream pies, ice cream cookies, and chocolate-dipped ice cream cones.
Sundaes are quite popular and scrumptious.
As are the banana splits. This one has two baseball-sized scoops of homemade mint chip and cookies-and-cream ice cream with hot fudge, homemade whipped cream, and a cherry.
Or how about this delectable banana split with homemade strawberry and banana ice cream, hot fudge, caramel, homemade whipped cream, and a cherry on top?
These double scoops of fantastic homemade cherry vanilla/coffee and orange pineapple/pistachio in traditional sugar cones look absolutely amazing.
In addition to divine homemade ice cream, Steve's has a large variety of toppings to choose from.
Steve's Homemade Ice Cream is open everyday at 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. You can reach the shop at (775) 575-0500.
