If you're looking for a spot in Nevada that's small and out of the way, it's definitely the town of Pioche. Back in the 1800's this town had about 8,000 residents but today the population is only 1/8th of that. The town is known as a bit of a ghost town because of the remains that you can still see of mining equipment and a tramway that still has cables running across the town. There's a little gem of a restaurant here that can't be beat and is definitely worth the drive out to Pioche!
The Ghost Town Cafe was originally meant to be an art studio to develop the work of owner Kelly Garni. If that names sounds familiar to anyone who's grown up in the 70's and 80;s, he was a founding member of the band Quiet Riot.
The building was originally a blacksmith shop built in 1865.
Eventually the building morphed into an art gallery and then into a coffee shop and now it's a cafe.
The artwork, friendly owners and staff and the general look of the place give a real homey, rustic sense of ambiance. There's even a wood-burning stove by the couches!
The Ghost Town Art & Coffee Co serves burgers, grilled sandwiches, hot dogs and chili, as well as deluxe coffees and deserts.
The cafe also has wifi which is useful as signals are sometimes hard to get for travelers in the area.
Some sandwich favorites are their Pulled Pork Loin, pictured here with Cheddar. All their food is grilled on a BBQ at the cafe.
Another mouthwatering sandwich you can enjoy at the Ghost Town Art & Coffee Co is their Rockin Reuben! The grilled sandwich has pastrami (of course!), Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, honey Dijon mustard and served on marble rye bread,
Scrumptiously decadent desserts include freshly baked brownies and cookies and sundaes. They also have several gourmet flavors of hot chocolate.
The Ghost Town Art & Coffee Co is more than just a restaurant. It also serves as an art gallery featuring the work of Kelly Garni. You sometimes may even run into him hanging out in the cafe and playing acoustic guitar.
Work includes both photography and creations from found items scavenged in the desert and around the town. All the artwork is for sale so you can bring a piece home if you enjoy it!
The Ghost Town Art & Coffee Co is located at 597 Main Street. It's about a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas (take the I-15 north to the 93 north, to US 93 N/Great Basin Highway. Go left on NV-322 west and take to Main Street).
