One of Nebraska's most remarkable restaurants is hiding in a place you'd never suspect. This undeniably rustic-looking spot is far more than meets the eye - it's the embodiment of a hidden gem.
It wouldn't be a stretch to say that The Speakeasy is in the middle of nowhere. In fact, the town it's in technically no longer exists.
Just outside of Holdrege, the former railroad town of Sacramento is now known as an unincorporated community and there's not a whole lot to see there. But Sacramento does have one very big draw, and it's located in this deceptively modest building.
Inside the unassuming structure is one of Nebraska's finest dining experiences, The Speakeasy. Much like the secret Prohibition-era drinking establishments it's named for, The Speakeasy is hiding in plain sight and offers a surprisingly sophisticated ambiance and menu.
It's nothing like the other small-town Nebraska restaurants we all know and love. It's an upscale destination that still manages to feel cozy and welcoming.
Similarly, the menu mixes sophisticated concepts with familiar favorites for a collection of can't-miss dishes. You'll want to make at least a few visits to sample everything that talented chef/owner Ryan Puls carefully crafts.
While you'll find old standards like burgers on the menu, they're elevated to the next level with creative components like aioli, caramelized onions, and arugula.
Even humble poultry dishes are made special with unique touches like brandy-mustard mushroom cream sauce and blueberry port demi-glace.
Of course, what would a Nebraska restaurant be without a hearty beef selection? Mouthwatering dishes like the Sacramento strip and the steak hashé (pictured below) are sure to satisfy any meaty craving.
