We love the character that shines through in family-owned restaurants. Unlike chains which have a corporate formula for everything from color schemes to pre-made pies, local restaurants can let the owners' personalities create a unique dining experience. Fuller's Family Restaurant in McCook is a fantastic example of an adorable local place with personality to spare.
Fuller's is a McCook institution. The classic diner is open 24 hours a day, and they're well known for their home-cooked food and generous portions.
But Fuller's is almost as well known for their huge collection of cookie jars.
The colorful containers line the walls, sitting on shelves and surrounding diners as they eat.
There are more than 3,000 of them of every shape and design imaginable.
It's fun to look through the lines of cookie jars and see just how odd some of those shapes are. Who would have thought that lighthouse-shaped cookie jars exist?
The huge collection came close to being wiped out in the summer of 2013 when a fire destroyed the restaurant. However, many of the jars were able to be salvaged and were moved over to the new location, which opened just one month after the fire.
Although the massive cookie jar collection is definitely one of the diner's more notable characteristics, it's really the delicious food and family atmosphere that sets Fuller's apart.
In February 2016, owner Val Fuller proved his commitment to the community by rescuing several truckers stranded by a severe snowstorm.
Fuller took his own vehicle to the Walmart parking lot where many truckers were stuck in the snow, unable to move their rigs for the night. He brought seven of them back to the diner for a hot meal and some conversation with the locals.
Next time you're in McCook, this is a fun place to eat - even if you just stop in for a piece of homemade pie. Find them at 110 Norris Ave, McCook, NE 69001.
