The famed speakeasy made its debut as early as 1889, when a newspaper in Pennsylvania first published a story about the rowdy, unlicensed saloons that were popping up around the city. By the time of prohibition, they'd become a national phenomenon, bringing the nation together as they tossed drinks back in secret. Of course, now it's quite legal to drink, but the mystery and fun associated with the old school speakeasy is still alive and well. If you're looking to experience the mystery and fun of the past, then make sure to check out The Patterson House in Nashville's Midtown neighborhood.
The Patterson House has long been an institution of grand rapport in Nashville. Known for its speakeasy theme and lack of signage, the beautiful space has an air of luxurious mystery.
If you come on the weekend, be ready for a line! You'll wait in a cozy, low-lit library that boasts bottles on the walls and a plethora of aging books. There are only a handful of guests who are let into the main dining room at a time, so make sure you indulge in the "rules" listed in the waiting room. Including, but not limited to: "Men must refrain from introducing themselves to women, unless invited or introduced by a friendly party."
Once your table is ready, you'll be led through a heavy velvet curtain to the decadently designed dining space. Lush and lit by yellow lamps, the tin ceiling and mountain of liquor bottles that glint in the middle of the room immediately transport you to another time. The cocktails are top-notch, some of the best in the city, and are artfully made. Make sure to keep an eye on the bartenders throughout the night! Their creativity goes unparalleled in Nashville.
The menu consists of small plates with an emphasis on rich flavor profiles. Order tater tots, an American classic, and they'll come with a side of dill & horseradish creme fraiche. Those shrimp corndogs? Served up with spicy Yazoo mustard.
Desserts will change seasonally, but the s'mores in a jar, served with cartreuse fluff, Nutella and graham crackers gives an adult spin to a childhood favorite. Not looking for anything too fancy? Pair your high class cocktail with cinnamon sugar donuts.
Will you be joining for a drink or two? A true experience in the beauty of the past, there's no reason to skip out on this Grand Dame of a Nashville gem.
You can visit and indulge for yourself every day of the week, from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. from Wednesday to Saturday, and from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. from Sunday to Tuesday.
If you're looking for more information, you can find it at The Patterson House official website.
