Whether you’re in the mood for fine dining or a burger at a casual joint, you’ll find it all in Montana. From major chains, to enviable steakhouses, to small mom-and-pop stops, our state has something for everyone. But some restaurants are loved not only for the food they serve but for their history and atmosphere. Yesterday’s Calf-A is one of those places and that's why it just may be the most unique restaurant in Montana.
Yesterday’s Calf-A is located in the tiny town of Dell, which is about 40 miles south of Dillon. You’ll notice its uniqueness as soon as you see it because of the building—it’s an old schoolhouse! It was converted to a restaurant in 1978, and the locals, tourists, and passersby have been coming in for a good meal ever since.
The original blackboard from the school still hangs on the wall, and that’s where you’ll find lists of the daily soups and freshly baked pies that are available.
There is also a collection of books in one corner and shelves of vintage memorabilia from the school age area. A large map on one of the walls has pins from all over the world to show where the restaurant’s many customers have come from.
You would think that with this amazing atmosphere that Yesterday’s Calf-A would get away with serving mediocre food. After all, its history and reputation are enough, right? Well, you’d be wrong. This place is known for serving delicious breakfasts, juicy burgers, and the best pie on the planet.
You can also fill up with a good old-fashioned home cooked dinner. A lot of locals come to Yesterday’s Calf-A regularly, and that should tell you how good it is. But we recommend starting your meal with pie so that you know you’ll have room.
There’s no doubt about it, Yesterday’s Calf-A is worth a stop. In fact, it’s worth going out of your way to have a meal there.
