Some restaurants lure us in with their attractive exteriors and inviting decor, while others’ buildings leave us wondering what we might find inside. But you know what they say about judging a book by its cover, and the same is true for dining establishments. These restaurants aren’t exactly hole-in-the-wall places, but they’re not flashy, either. But rest assured, it’s what’s on the inside—and on your plate—that counts.
1. Spud’s Grub Hut, 1903 5th Avenue, Havre
Spud’s opened in 2015 and quickly earned a great reputation around town. Their menu consists of tasty sandwiches and good old-fashioned comfort food.
2. Mel’s Diner, 121 Main Street, Augusta
Ask an Augusta local where to go for a great lunch (and a delicious milkshake) and they’ll likely direct you to the unassuming but excellent Mel’s Diner. You’d be wise to take their advice.
3. Echo Lake Cafe, 1195 MT-83, Bigfork
Echo Lake Cafe’s exterior is actually pretty inviting. Inside, you’ll find the most delicious breakfast and lunch menu you could imagine, which the family-owned restaurant has been serving since 1960.
4. Cafe Zydeco, 2711 W College Street, Bozeman
Cajun food in the heart of Bozeman? It’s true, you’ll find po boys, gumbo and jambalaya inside this charming building, and they’re wonderful. Cafe Zydeco also has (unassuming) locations in Missoula, Billings and Helena.
5. Dinosaur Cafe, 428 N Higgins Ave, Missoula
It would be easy to walk right by the Dinosaur Cafe on Higgins, but if you can find it, you’ll be treated to some seriously tasty Creole cooking.
6. Imperial Thai, 216 N Broadway, Billings
Imperial Thai is the new kid on the block in Billings, but it already has an outstanding reputation. The simple exterior is not an indication of the food, which is anything but.
7. Mexico Lindo, 501 Main Street, Miles City
Mexico Lindo serves classic Mexican entrees in an unpretentious setting. The flavors, portions and smiles are all large here.
8. Serenity Bistro, 38 N Canyon Street, West Yellowstone
Serenity Bistro sits in a row of small buildings on Canyon Street. It looks simple on the outside, but the interior is anything but. Between the romantic ambiance and the gourmet presentation of the food, you’ll be smitten with Serenity.
9. Harry’s Place, 631 E Main Street, Lewistown
You might not be sure what to expect just by looking at the outside of Harry’s Place. But once you’re inside, the hearty and generously portioned food will make you glad you took the chance.
10. Karmadillos Southwestern Cafe, 139 Reeder's Alley, Helena
Located in Helena’s historic Reeder’s Alley, Karmadillos sits at the top of a hill. But the authentic Southwest-style Mexican food and festive patio make it well worth the climb.
11. 2K’s Kafe, 406 3rd Avenue S, Great Falls
Would you pass this building without giving it a second glance? If so, you’d be missing out on a burger and brunch joint that serves outstanding food that will keep you full all day.
