Born-and-raised Montanans, do you remember your favorite restaurant growing up? If you're lucky, it's still around. We're all about preserving our culture here, including our dining establishments. And if you've ever been to the Double Front Cafe in Missoula, you know they're one of our timeless treasures.
You'll find this casual eatery at 122 West Alder Street.
They're open daily from 9AM-11PM.
The Double Front has been serving their irresistible fried chicken since 1961, but the building history goes back much further.
The building was constructed in 1909 and was used as a pool hall in its early years. During prohibition, it was used as a private home, but rumors indicate that some bootlegging happened there. When alcohol was legal again, it officially became a bar, eventually being taken over by the Herndon family.
This place hasn't changed much over the years, but that's a good thing.
It's a local icon.
The chicken here is mouthwatering.
The team at Double Front Cafe is very skilled in chicken-frying. They also have some delicious appetizers like breaded mushrooms and mac & cheese wedges.
The chicken is cooked to order and never frozen, which means your dinner could take awhile.
Luckily, if you're not planning to dine in, there's a lounge you can relax in while you're waiting for your order.
This restaurant isn't fancy or new, but it belongs on every Montanan's dining bucket list.
If the best fried chicken on Earth doesn't sound appealing, they do have other entrees, and there's a kids' menu for young patrons.
The Double Front is definitely a timeless Montana classic. And if you're looking for a unique and unforgettable dining experience, try one of these restaurants.
