Life in the Last Best Place is pretty great. Since we love preserving our past, it's entirely possible to have a meal inside a building that has been around for over 100 years. However, it's not every day you'll see one with a stray bullet lodged in the wall from a shootout in the 1800s -- but that's exactly what you'll find at The Stray Bullet in Ovando.
The Stray Bullet is located on Main Street in Ovando, a tiny town in Powell County.
Less than 100 people call Ovando home, so it's safe to say there's not a lot going on here.
The cafe is housed in a 100-year-old building with a high false front.
This is what most of the buildings in town look like, which makes visiting feel like going back in time.
You're probably wondering where the name came from -- and, yes, there is a stray bullet here.
In the late 1800s, this was a saloon slinging drinks to cowboys and ranchers. Occasionally things got out of hand, and bar room brawls erupted. A stray bullet from one of those shoot-outs remains stuck in the cafe's wall.
The ambiance here is warm and welcoming, and the dining room is always packed with locals.
They serve breakfast and lunch daily from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. during the summer. Their hours vary in the off season.
The menu here is simple and classic, but the food is quite good.
For breakfast, order a Side Saddle (eggs, hashbrowns & toast), a Posse breakfast sandwich, or one of the many omelets and scrambles. If you're in the mood for lunch, the sandwich list is long and delicious.
Stop by The Stray Bullet the next time you're in the area.
Old school eateries like this aren't as common as they once were, so it's important to give them our support.
Have you ever visited The Stray Bullet? It's one of many great spots in the Treasure State to enjoy a great breakfast.
