You know your restaurant is in a remote location when your slogan is "Where the hell is Roscoe?" And that’s exactly what people say when you recommend they have dinner at the Grizzly Bar and Grill. Roscoe is a tiny unincorporated community located about 20 miles from Red Lodge. It has about 15 residents, a post office, a guest ranch, and one of the best steakhouses in the area. And that's pretty much it. You'll want to seek out this remote restaurant in Montana.
The Grizzly Bar and Grill is about as "Montana" as it gets. Surrounded on all sides by cattle ranches, it’s got the classic decor you’d expect from a remote restaurant: a mounted bear at the entrance, antlers on the wall, and a few local cowboys sitting at the bar. Since there are so few locals, the Grizzly Bar depends on tourists and Montanans who are willing to take a long drive for a meal. They get quite a few patrons from Billings, which is 72 miles away.
But one good thing about having a "middle of nowhere" restaurant is that the surrounding scenery is absolutely beautiful. It’s near the picturesque East Rosebud River, and the highways that reach it are surrounded by green, rolling hills that will have you feeling like you’re driving through paradise.
But without a doubt, the absolute best thing about the Grizzly Bar is the food. In a state like Montana, it’s difficult to award one single restaurant with serving the best steaks in the state, but the Grizzly’s perfectly cut and cooked filets (not to mention their amazing prime rib) are certainly in the top tier.
If you go at lunch time, prepare to enjoy one of the best burgers you’ve ever had in your life. All the meat they use is local, fresh, and top quality.
On warm days, the patio dining allows you to enjoy the great outdoors while you enjoy your tasty steak.
The Grizzly Bar has been a Montana icon for many years. If you’re anywhere near Billings, Laurel or Red Lodge, do yourself the favor of making the trip. You may have to wait a while on a busy day, but it’s a meal well worth waiting for. Besides, you’ll have a big stuffed bear and plenty of real deer outside to keep you company.
Have you been to the Grizzly Bar & Grill? It earned a spot on our ultimate Montana dining bucket list.
