When you’re starving and it’s lunchtime, nothing satisfies quite like the perfect sandwich. And while Montana has hundreds upon hundreds of options for this classic staple, we happen to think these 10 stand out among the rest. How many of these sandwiches have you tried?

1. Pickle Barrel’s Bobcat Special, multiple locations

The Pickle Barrel is known as Montana’s sandwich shop, and the Bobcat Special is one of their best sellers. Topped with turkey, roast beef, Swiss and Monterey Jack cheeses, it’s easy to see why it’s so popular.

2. A Steak and Cheese from Paul Bunyan’s, 3150 Busch St, Butte

Thin sliced steak grilled with onion, topped with provolone, lettuce and Italian dressing, served hot on a toasted roll. Yes, please.

3. Doc’s Sandwich Shop’s Dr. Who, 214 N Higgins Ave., Missoula

Amazingly enough, the sandwiches here are named after "famous" doctors, right down to the Doogie Howser M.D. and the Dr. Seuss on the kids’ menu. You really can’t go wrong with your sandwich choice here, but the Dr. Who is especially delicious, topped with turkey, cheddar, bacon, avocado, mayo, lettuce and tomato.

4. An Out of Towner from TopZ Sandwich Company, 900 S 24th St W., Billings

Sandwiches are TopZ are unbelievably tasty. And while there’s not one we DON’T recommend (especially the beef sandwich topped with housemade queso), the most popular menu pick seems to be the Out of Towner. The combination of ham, parmesan, corn, black beans, jalapenos and Southwest sauce might seem odd, but it’s actually delicious.

5. A TAB from Mama Mac’s, 81809 Gallatin Rd., Bozeman

Mama Mac’s Bakery & Sandwich Shop is located in the Four Corners area, and their freshly baked bread makes all of their sandwiches amazing. Piled (extremely) high with turkey, bacon, lettuce, olives and avocado, the TAB is a culinary delight you’ll want to eat very carefully.

6. Wheat Montana’s Reuben, multiple locations

Wheat Montana is known throughout our great state for their legendary cinnamon rolls and other breakfast delicacies. But if you like a good Reuben, you’ll love their version.

7. A French Dip from The Montana Club, multiple locations

There are so many excellent places to get a French dip in Montana that it’s impossible to say who makes the best. But at The Montana Club, the dip begins with a butter-grilled steak roll and is topped with flavorful thin-sliced roast beef. It’s also served with housemade Au Jus.

8. Montana Sub Shop’s Steak & Cheese, 701 9th St. S., Great Falls

The name of this place is very appropriate—most of the sandwiches are named after cities and towns in Montana. If you’re loyal to your hometown, choose the sandwich named after it… otherwise, the steak & cheese sub is excellent.

9. Bayou Po’ Boy, Cafe Zydeco, 2503 Montana Ave., Billings

Cafe Zydeco is one fine Cajun joint, and their Bayou Po’ Boy gives you a taste of Louisiana right here in Montana. Piled high with deep fried shrimp and spicy sauce, it will convert even the most "meat and potatoes only" eater.

10. A Gourmet Grilled Cheese from The Coffee Pot & Bakery, 80795 Gallatin Rd., Bozeman

The Coffee Pot & Bakery serves perfectly made lattes out of housemade pottery (which they also sell). Their delectable lunch menu includes a Gourmet Grilled Cheese, a delightful combination of gouda and sharp cheddar served on homemade Ciabatta bread. You can also add slow roasted pulled pork, turkey or roast ham if you need something meatier.
