If there's one thing Montanans will always love, it's a good steakhouse. And we certainly have many to choose from, from our tried-and-true establishments to our sleek, modern spots. If you're lucky, you might even enjoy a bit of both.
Recently, Mercantile Steak opened in the old Kalispell Mercantile Building, combining local history with contemporary cuisine.
It all started over a century ago, when the Kalispell Mercantile opened in the Flathead Valley and promptly became the premier retailer of quality goods and merchandise.
Back then, people would come from all over Western Montana to purchase household staples, cooking supplies, and things like tack and buggies.
The KM Building has been home to numerous restaurants and other businesses over the years, but it looks fantastic as Mercantile Steak.
Owner Pat Carloss, who also owns Whitefish’s Tupelo Grille and Abruzzo Italian Kitchen and the Gunsight Saloon in Columbia Falls, had a goal of bringing in more nightlife and reviving downtown Kalispell.
Carloss and his team did an excellent job designing the new space, which opened as Mercantile Steak at the end of May 2021.
Look closely and you'll notice the original Tiffany-style lamps, stained glass windows, and the copper-colored ceiling.
But while the history of this place is fascinating and the ambiance is fantastic, it's the food that will keep you coming back for more.
This is a steakhouse, and rest assured, they do them right. Whether you order an 8-ounce sirloin or the enormous porterhouse meant for two, you won't be disappointed.
Steak definitely dominates the menu, but it's not the only tasty thing you can order.
The KM Burger comes with bacon confit, tomato jam, garlic aioli, arugula, aged white cheddar, ciabatta, and a side of duck fat fries. You can also try the fish of the day, delicious pasta, or a healthy salad.
Mercantile Steak is open on Tuesday - Saturday at 5 p.m. for dinner.
Come check out this wonderful new addition to Kalispell.
