There are certain things that are simply better in the summer in Montana, road trips and ice cream being two of them. And as the weather slowly but surely begins to warm up in the Treasure State, our minds start to wander to open roads and cool treats.
This ice cream trail combines two amazing warm weather pastimes, scenic drives and waffle cones (or cups, if you prefer). Whether you attempt it in one delightfully sugary day or spread it out over a weekend, you'll get to see some of our most charming cities as you enjoy treats from some of our most popular ice cream shops.
For directions, check out the official itinerary.
1. Sweet Peaks Ice Cream, Whitefish
The original Sweet Peaks location is the perfect place to start. Since 2010, this shop has been perfecting the art of ice cream making and expanding their locations across Montana.
2. The Ice Cream Place, Seeley Lake
This old-fashioned Seeley Lake gem will be open for the season by mid-May. When it's up and running, stopping by for a classic soft serve cone is an absolute must.
3. Big Dipper Ice Cream, Missoula

If You Only Have One Day to Visit This Small Town in Maryland, Here’s Everything You Absolutely Can’t Miss
Missoula's most beloved ice cream shop has made magazine lists of the best ice cream in America. The original Missoula ice cream truck is wildly popular, and there are now locations in Billings and Helena as well.
4. Ripples Ice Cream Parlor, Plains
Ice cream isn't the only thing you'll find on the Ripples menu - they also sell homemade soup and take and bake pizzas. But their long list of Wilcoxson's ice cream flavors definitely steal the spotlight.
5. The Cove Deli and Pizza, Polson
The Cove is a quirky little gem located in the small town of Polson. While they're primarily a pizza joint, they also have 16 rotating flavors of Montana-made Wilcoxson's ice cream. This is one restaurant where it's easy to eat dessert first.
