Lengthy sit-down meals have their time and place, but sometimes nothing but a good old-fashioned sandwich will do. The next time you’re craving one, look past the national chains and give one of your local businesses a try. We’ve got some amazing sandwich artists here in Montana, and these 13 places are just a few of our best spots.
1. The Garage Soup Shack & Mesquite Grill, Bozeman
Everyone in Bozeman knows The Garage is the place to go for savory homemade soup. But they also serve amazing sandwiches like the Grilled Chicken Sandwich (with mesquite grilled chicken breast and teriyaki sauce) or the Ultimate Grilled Cheese.
2. Tagliare Delicatessen, Missoula
Tagliare isn’t Missoula’s oldest sandwich shop by any means, but they’re already a well-known local favorite. Their menu includes some amazingly named sandwiches with meats and cheeses that can be tough to find.
3. The Staggering Ox, Multiple Locations
The Staggering Ox has gotten national attention for its delicious and bizarre sandwiches, which are served in hollowed out bread. You’ll find this Montana chain in Helena, Missoula, Billings and Butte.
4. The Grateful Bread, Havre
Along with their classic pastries, The Grateful Bread serves savory sandwiches on their freshly made bread. This is a Baker’s Club on toasted bread.
5. Montana Sub Shop, Great Falls
For a classic meaty sub served on fresh bread, head to Montana Sub Shop in Great Falls. This locally owned gem also has great service.
6. Main Street Grind, Miles City
This bakery and deli specializes in all the best food groups: Baked goods, coffee, burgers and, of course, sandwiches.
7. TopZ Sandwich Company, Billings
8. Woodside Bakery, West Yellowstone
Stop by Woodside Bakery on your way to Yellowstone and order a custom-made sandwich complete with your choice of freshly baked bread. You’ll be glad you did.
9. Three Forks Grille, Columbia Falls
Three Forks Grille’s location makes it a great choice for fueling up on your way to Glacier National Park, Whitefish Mountain Resort or the Flathead River. They serve fresh, local food—and it tastes like it.
10. Mama Mac’s Bakery and Sandwich Shop, Bozeman
Known for their delicious breakfasts and sandwiches, this locally owned bakery is a must for anyone in the Bozeman area.
11. Pork Chop John’s, Butte
Pork Chop John’s is part of Butte’s history. The original Pork Chop Sandwich was founded in 1924, when the original Pork Chop John sold his pork chop sandwiches out of the back of a wagon on the corner of Mercury and Main Streets. Pork Chop John’s now has two Butte locations, and the sandwiches are just as amazing.
12. Doc’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop, Missoula
Doc’s is located in the historic Higgins Building in downtown Missoula, and it’s been a local staple for two decades. This sandwich shop has received many local awards, and it’s easy to see (taste) why.
13. The Pickle Barrel, Multiple Locations
No sandwich shop list would be complete without this Montana classic. The Pickle Barrel has been a Bozeman staple for over 30 years and now has locations in Billings, Belgrade, Livingston and the lucky folks in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
