Once upon a time, in 2006, a brewer moved from Red Lodge to Billings and opened a brewpub in an old service station. Then, in 2011, they took over an old carriage station eight blocks away and opened a taproom. Since then, Angry Hank's has become legendary, with many a Montanan walking through the doors and falling in love. Rest assured, the only thing that will make you angry here is the fact that you'll eventually have to leave.
Angry Hank's was actually named after a family friend of the founder's, one who seemed perpetually grumpy.
He wasn't a miserable person, just gruff - as the website puts it, he just had a gruff way of letting you know he cared.
These days, Angry Hank's is a place to relax, hang out, drink great beer and have good conversations.
The beer is distributed to bars and restaurants across south-central Montana, but there's nothing like drinking it from the source.
The beer is made with water from the largest free-flowing river in the country, yeast grown in-house, and Montana-grown barley malted in Great Falls.
Like about 70% of brewers nationwide, the hops come from the Yakima Valley in Washington.
Everything is done in-house, from the milling and mashing to the fermenting and kegging.
Not many breweries can make that claim.
Not only is the taste of the brew fantastic, but the names are quite creative.
You can enjoy Anger Management Belgian Wheat, Head Trauma India Pale Ale, and Dog Slobber Brown Ale, just to name a few. They also sell swag, in case you love the place enough to wear a shirt.
The Angry Hank's taproom is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.
Brewery hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday. It's also a cash-only business, so come prepared.
Have you ever been to Angry Hank's? It would make a perfect addition to this brewery trail.
