Bucket lists are everywhere these days, involving everything from traveling to reading books. But a Montana food bucket list just might be the most fun kind of all. Who doesn’t love eating delicious local delicacies?
A true food bucket list will have hundreds (or thousands!) of things on it, so consider these 15 Montana dishes a good start to yours. And if personal preferences or food allergies keep you away from any of these, just substitute them with something equally as tasty.
1. A pastry from Wheat Montana.
For three generations, this family owned and operated company has been baking and serving some scrumptious pastries, sandwiches and breakfast items. We highly recommend starting with a cinnamon roll.
2. While we’re at it, a pastry from the Polebridge Mercantile.
The Polebridge Mercantile and Bakery has been a Northwest Montana favorite for over 100 years. Their baked goods are legendary.
3. A pasty.
A pasty is a pastry stuffed with meat, potatoes, and veggies, smothered in gravy. You’ll find them all over Butte (and in the U.K.).
4. Huckleberry pie.
It’s a Montana classic. Most of us have had it by the age of four, but if you haven’t, try it. Preferably a homemade slice.
5. An Ugly Burger from Rod’s Drive Inn in Havre.
People from all corners of Montana seem to know about this little burger joint in Havre with the big Ugly Burger. It doesn’t taste ugly, we assure you.
6. A sandwich from the Pickle Barrel.
It’s the most popular Montana-born sandwich chain, so you may as well see what the fuss is all about.
7. A steak from the Land of Magic Dinner Club in Manhattan.
Yes, there are many wonderful spots to get a steak in Montana. In fact, the Land of Magic is in the same little town as Sir Scott’s Oasis, a famous local landmark. But sink your teeth into a juicy steak here and you’ll understand why it’s on this list.
8. Buffalo jerky.
Buffalo is Montana’s original red meat, and our buffalo jerky is the best.
9. Martinson’s Ranch Chocolates.
Warning: these made-in-Montana candies are incredibly addictive. Try them anyway.
10. S’mores.
No, s’mores were not invented in Montana. But just look at all of the beautiful camping spots. Never enjoying s’mores around a campfire in Montana is depriving yourself of sweet, sticky fun.
11. MacKenzie River Pizza
This widely successful chain got its start in Bozeman. It’s just as delicious today as it was 22 years ago.
12. Donuts from Boomerang Bakery in Deer Lodge.
This little bakery has some of the most flavorful fresh donuts you’ll find anywhere.
13. Pizza from Eugene’s in Glasgow.
Eugene’s pizza is so good that people all over the country pay to have their half-baked pies shipped to them. That means you don’t even have to travel to Glasgow to try it (though if you’re in the area, you might as well enjoy it fresh).
14. Ice cream from Sweet Peaks in Whitefish.
This homemade ice cream got its start here. There are now several shops across Montana and even one in North Idaho, but we recommend trying a cone from the original location.
15. Rocky Mountain oysters.
No judgment if you skip this one. But no one can ever say you're not a true Montanan if you try them.
Now that this list has been started, let’s finish it! What other Montana dishes do you think are an absolute must?
