One of the many job perks of writing about the Last Best Place is eating our way around it. In 2016, we wrote up numerous lists of delicious restaurants in Montana, and we’re just getting started. Expect many new and exciting culinary discoveries in 2017… and in the meantime, treat yourself to a meal at as many of these places as possible this year. Your taste buds will thank you.
1. The Grizzly Bar and Grill, 16 E Rosebud Rd., Roscoe
The Grizzly Bar is basically in the middle of nowhere, but it's so worth the drive to sink your teeth into a juicy burger or steak.
2. The Keep, 102 Ben Hogan Dr.,Missoula
The Keep caught our attention in 2016 for its castle-like setting. The delicious food served there is just a bonus.
3. Local Kitchen & Bar, 1430 Country Manor Blvd., Billings
Billings' Local Kitchen & Bar made several of our lists last year, mainly for serving (obviously) local food. If you haven't been, put it on your list the next time you're out and about in Billings.
4. The Pekin Noodle Parlor, 117 S Main St., Butte
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but Montana's oldest restaurant is a timeless treasure with a special spot in our history.
5. The Sip ‘N Dip Lounge, 17 7th St S., Great Falls
How could Montana's quirkiest restaurant not earn a spot on this list? It's not our fanciest or finest dining option, but it's so much fun.
6. Rod’s Drive-In, 1827 5th Ave., Havre
If Montana had a state burger, the Ugly Burger from Rod's would certainly be it.
7. Thirsty Turtle Burgers & BBQ, 37 McLeod St., Big Timber
Ask anyone in the Big Timber area for a restaurant recommendation and you'll probably be directed straight to the Thirsty Turtle. Just look at this amazing Pork Frito Sammie.
8. The Land of Magic Dinner Club, 11060 Front St., Logan
The Land of Magic is a must-try. Just try the twice baked potato with your steak.
9. Yesterday’s Calf-A, 435 Oregon Shortline Rd., Dell
In our opinion, the title of the most unique restaurant in Montana belongs to this converted one-room schoolhouse. Also, they have incredible pie.
10. Mabel’s Kitchen, 801 E Main St., Laurel
We love to mention Mabel's because it's such a small, unassuming, hidden gem. But the authentic Mexican food served here is amazing... in fact, one of our commenters said she'd eat here if it was her last meal on Earth!
11. Hole in the Wall, 602 Main St., Miles City
Yes, it's called Hole in the Wall, which is part of the reason it made our list of tasty hole in the wall restaurants. But this casual eatery really is a great place to take your family or friends.
12. The Nova Cafe, 312 E Main St., Bozeman
The Nova Cafe can be summed up in three words: Best. Brunch. EVER.
13. Union Grille Restaurant, 1 Grand Union Sq., Fort Benton
We fully admit Fort Benton has a special place in our hearts, especially the historic Grand Union Hotel and its beautiful onsite restaurant. If you've never explored this beautiful building, a weekend getaway is in order this year.
Wherever you choose to dine in Montana in 2017, we hope you enjoy every meal. Here's a list of 17 great places to explore this year.
