Babycakes makes some of the best around for $3 apiece, but if you want a lot, you'll have to order 2-5 days in advance. Waiting for those cupcakes is hard, but the payoff is incredible! If you're crazy about cupcakes, a huge one will run you about $35.

2. Cupcake A La Mode — 4639 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, Missouri

Cupcakes "a la mode" sound wonderful, but most of the cupcakes here don't in fact come with ice cream. However, they have plenty of flavors to choose from that make you feel like ice cream isn't even needed. Come try some sometime!

3. Gigi's Cupcakes — 6780 W 135th St, Overland Park, Kansas

Gigi's does magical things with cupcakes, and every flavor (whether you like toppings or plain frosting) is rich but well put together so you don't get overwhelmed. They're one of my go-to favorites for a quick bite that's just the sweet to hit the spot on those days when you can't resist. Every day should be cupcake day!

KC Cupcake Co. makes cupcakes in every color, flavor, and design. You can find plenty of options when ordering batches, or just pick a couple up in store to bring a little special something to your day.

5. Mud Pie Vegan Bakery — 1615 W 39th St. Kansas City, Missouri

This is the only vegan bakery and coffeehouse in Kansas City, and they're proud of that fact! There's always a few that think you can't bake if you're vegan, but these guys prove every day that delicious baked goods don't need animal products to work. Why not step outside of your usual zone and try something new?

6. Simply Frosted — 1121 W Main St. Blue Springs, Missouri

Making cupcakes from scratch isn't too crazy for most of us, but it's a lot easier when someone else is doing it all for you. Simply Frosted is a cupcakery that makes 15 different flavors every day, as well as seasonal varieties that turn into local favorites when the time is right.

7. Smallcakes — 3 locations in Kansas City

Smallcakes might have palm-sized cupcakes, but their flavors are in no way little. They make everything from scratch just like any other cupcakery, but their cupcakes somehow have extra love in each bite. Anyone know their secret?
