Going to the arcade after school and on weekends was the thing to do when many of us were growing up unless, of course, we were lucky enough to have a video game console at home. We saved our quarters, ready to beat the high score on our favorite game until the jingle of the coins in our pockets went silent from emptiness. Relive a bit of that old-school magic at Draftcade, an arcade bar in Missouri that combines classic and modern arcade games with a menu of delicious food and drinks.
Pack your pocket with quarters, for old time's sake, when you head to Draftcade, an arcade and bar in Kansas City where time just slips away.
Although you'll be able to play a slew of classic arcade games - from Pac-Man to Centipede - you won't have to drop a quarter into the machine before each game. Instead, you'll just pay $7 for unlimited game play.

Since you can play as much as you want for $7, stop for a drink and a meal at the bar when you need a break.

Get ready to enter into a realm where time seems to pause. The Mercury Room sits perched high above the bustling streets of Kansas City, Missouri’s Crossroads Arts District, an intimate sanctuary far removed from the daily grind below. It’s not just a cocktail bar; it feels like you’re entering a portal to another world, where the skyline stretches endlessly, reflecting off glass surfaces that blur the lines between the stars and the city lights below.

Lighting is a critical element in shaping the ambiance of bars and restaurants, and it’s an area where many establishments falter. However, the lighting is nothing short of masterful at The Mercury Room. The Edison-style bulbs suspended overhead cast a soft, celestial glow, evoking the sense that the night sky itself has descended to join you. The illumination is so delicate and precise that it feels like the stars are just within reach, their light reflected off every surface, creating an otherworldly sheen that transports you to a realm of luxury and enchantment.
It’s as if you’ve stepped into a jewel box, each detail meticulously designed to captivate the senses. The atmosphere is one of quiet sophistication, a refined space curated by those who understand that true luxury is found in the nuances. Yet, despite this elegance, the setting remains inviting. The panoramic views of the highrise skyline, juxtaposed against the natural horizon, remind you that the world beyond this shimmering enclave is still within reach. It’s a space where the extraordinary and the familiar coexist, offering a refined escape that never loses touch with reality.
The Mercury Room, conceived by the creative minds behind The Monarch Bar and Verdigris [other highly regarded Kansas City, Missouri establishments], is a testament to the art of mixology. The moment you settle into one of the plush lounging couches, it’s clear that this is a place where the ordinary is left at the door. With its gleaming surfaces and meticulous arrangement of bottles, the bar itself is a stage where alchemy happens, and the bartenders are the magicians.
I love a story within a story. Kansas City, Missouri, is home to Boulevard Brewing Co. The brewers ventured away from beer and created some spiked and sparkling seltzers, one popular staple in Kansas City - Pearl Yuzu Quirk. The Mercury Room created a stiffer version called KWERK with Asian Pear, Kabos [citrus fruit native to Japan, similar to Yuzu], Lemongrass Shochu [traditional Japanese distilled spirit], and Japanese vodka. Yum!
As you can see, the cocktail menu is imaginative. Seasonal concoctions push the boundaries of flavor and presentation; each sip tells a story. It is a story of passion, creativity, and a deep understanding of the craft. The crown jewel of the menu, a $135 Manhattan, isn’t just a drink; it’s an experience. Made with WhistlePig 18-year-old whiskey, Barolo Chinato, and aromatic bitters, it’s a testament to the heights that a simple cocktail can reach in the hands of experts.
As you gaze out through the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city stretches out before you, a patchwork of lights and shadows. The view alone is worth the visit, but the overall experience leaves a lasting impression. The bar welcomes guests from the late afternoon into the late evening, offering the perfect opportunity to time your visit around sunset. Start on the relaxed terrace, where you can watch the sun casting a warm golden glow over the cityscape. As twilight deepens, you’re drawn inside to the “jewel box” of the bar, where the ceiling’s soft, star-like glow mirrors the twinkling lights of the skyline outside.
The Mercury Room is more than just a beautiful space; it’s slightly exclusive. The dress code, which leans towards smart business casual, ensures that the atmosphere remains as refined as the cocktails. Men need a jacket or button-down shirt with a collar, closed-toe shoes, and long pants. Athletic wear, ripped jeans, beanies, ball caps, t-shirts, and hoodies are not allowed.
No food is served, so it’s wise to dine beforehand, allowing you to focus entirely on the liquid artistry in your glass. The Mercury Room offers a standard reservation for a la carte cocktails or a three-course drink tasting starting at around $75. Most drinks run about $20. Visit the Facebook page to see featured seasonal drinks. You can reserve bar or table seating. Lounge and terrace seating is first come, first serve. Reservations are not required but are encouraged.
After a few well-crafted cocktails, you’ll feel reluctant to leave this glimmering retreat. The Mercury Room is not just a bar; it’s an escape, a momentary step into a world where everything feels just a little more special and refined. As you descend back to the streets below, the city feels a little different—like you’ve seen it from a new perspective that will linger long after the last sip.

One of my favorite things about Missouri is its many hidden gems, and some of the most amazing are in the most unexpected of places. Take this hidden speakeasy in St. Louis, Missouri as an example. Unless you're in the know, you probably wouldn't even realize it existed, right below a popular food hall and entertainment venue that's brimming with activity.

City Foundry in St. Louis - a food hall with shops and entertainment - is hiding a pretty big secret, but there are only two ways to discover it. You must be 21+ and you've got to head underground.
Don't forget your ID.
Stroll down the darkened staircase and underneath City Foundry, where you'll see a single light hanging above a door.
If it's red, you'll know None Of The Above, a modern and chic speakeasy, is open for business. Will you get in? Well, that all depends. The St. Louis speakeasy takes limited reservations and accepts walk-ins unless it's full.
None Of The Above is only open on select evenings each week. A waitlist starts when the speakeasy is full.
Just getting to the speakeasy is half of the fun. The real experience, though, begins when you sit down and start to soak up the chill vibe of what's been described as an upscale cocktail lounge.
None Of The Above only allows small groups of six guests or fewer, and parties are seated once everyone has arrived.
But upscale doesn't mean a strict dress code. None Of The Above is come as you are, so you can sit back, relax, and really enjoy the experience.
