Outside of Missouri, many people don't know about the culinary masterpiece that is toasted ravioli. These amazing fried raviolis are so incredibly tasty that you can find them on most menus in the St. Louis area and they've begun to work their way across the Midwest into more restaurants. St. Louisians will tell you that these tasty treats were made here first.
Just like many of the best dishes known to man, toasted raviolis were created by accident. In 1940 at Oldani's Restaurant one of their chefs dropped a few boiled ravioli into hot grease. They decided to send the mistake out to the bar and the customers loved them. Now, decades later we still can't get enough of those fried stuffed pasta pillows! No matter where you live in Missouri, you can find a tasty plate of toasted ravs. However, we've gone ahead and compiled some of the best places across the state where you can enjoy this famous Missouri dish.
1. Charlie Gitto's on the Hill - St. Louis
Charlie Gitto's is an Italian landmark synonymous with fine dining. The owners claim that their restaurant was the location where toasted ravioli was first created in the 1940's when a different restaurant once operated there. The ravioli here are crisp, fried to perfection, and dusted with cheese. You'll love the t-ravs and everything else that comes out of their kitchen. They're open everyday for dinner only. 2. Lombardo's Trattoria - Facebook
Since 1934, Lombard's has been serving fantastic, authentic cuisine. Today Lombardo's is known for their award winning, over-sized toasted raviolis. You can get their ravioli stuffed with beef or with spinach and cheese. Lombardo's is open Lombardo's is open for lunch Wednesday thru Friday and they're open for dinner daily. 3. Cupini's - Kansas City
Culpini's opened in 2003 in hopes of providing Kansas City with fresh made pastas at an affordable price. They have quickly become the top spot for authentic Italian in the Kansas City. The toasted ravioli at Cupini's is made fresh daily, lightly breaded, and fried to perfection. 4. Garozzo's Ristorante - Kansas City
Garozzo's is one of the most well reviewed Italian restaurants in Kansas City. Michael Garozzo, the owner, was raised in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis and brought his dream of owning a restaurant to the Columbus Park neighborhood in KC. You'll flip for their perfectly plump raviolis. 5. Sidebar - Columbia
For the biggest and most uniquely flavored toasted raviolis in the state, you'll want to track down Sidebar. This one-woman show brings her tasty ravioli to different locations all across Columbia. Bambinos is voted as one of the five best restaurants in Springfield year after year. Their original location on Delmar, is tucked back into the Phelps Grove neighborhood. Mama Toscano's is where Italians go for ravioli. They make two different kinds daily. One is perfect for boiling and the other is breaded and perfect for frying. 9. Ciao - Cape Girardeau
Ciao serves authentic, delicious Italian cuisine. In addition to great food, you can also enjoy fine wines at Ciao.
