Fried chicken has got to be one of the best culinary creations ever. From the perfectly crispy skin to the juicy, flavorful meat, what’s not to love? Luckily for us Mississippians, fried chicken is practically a state specialty, with restaurants all over the Magnolia State putting their own twist on the southern classic; here are 10 places that serve some of the best.
1. Bully’s (3118 Livingston Rd., Jackson)
This restaurant may not look like much on the outside, but on the inside you’ll find soul food to die for. The menu of southern classics includes beef tips, oxtail, pigs feet, fried green tomatoes, and fried chicken, of course.
2. Carriage House (401 High St., Natchez)
Located on the grounds of the historic Stanton Hall mansion, this restaurant has been in the business of serving authentic southern cooking for over 50 years. The fried chicken, which is made using a secret recipe and technique, is one of the restaurant’s specialties and a customer favorite.
3. 4 Corners Chevron (502 S Lamar Blvd., Oxford)
Some of the best food in the state can be found in gas stations, and this Oxford Chevron is proof. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted with the smell of deliciously fried chicken. The boneless chicken is battered, fried, and served on a stick. If you’re ever in Oxford, this local favorite is a must-try.
4. The Dinner Bell (229 5th Ave., McComb)
Over the years, The Dinner Bell has become known for two things – large tables outfitted with lazy Susans and traditional southern cooking. Among the classic fare, you’ll find some of the best fried chicken in the state, which is so good it earned the eatery a spot in Delta Magazine’s "Fried Chicken Trail."
5. Lusco’s Restaurant (722 Carrollton Ave., Greenwood)
While many things have changed at Lusco’s since first opening in 1933, one thing has remained the same - the special batter used for the restaurant’s fried chicken. The lightly battered chicken is golden, tender, juicy, and just a little peppery, making it easy to see why Lusco’s has been named one of Delta Magazine’s "Top 25 Picks."
6. Two Sister’s Kitchen (707 N. Congress St., Jackson)
Please note, Two Sister's Kitchen has permanently closed down.
The succulent fried chicken at this Jackson eatery has consistently been included in the "Best of Jackson," an annual ranking of area restaurants, and in 2015, took the title of the "Best Local Fried Chicken." As if that’s not enough to convince you how great the chicken is, it has also been featured on the Travel Channel’s "Man v. Food Nation."
7. Old Country Store (18801 U.S Hwy 61, Lorman)
The all-you-can-eat buffet at this Lorman restaurant may be filled with southern classics but it’s the fried chicken customers can’t get enough of. The award-winning chicken, also known as Mr. D’s Heavenly Fried Chicken, has even been featured on Food Network’s "Best Thing I Ever Ate" and included in Yahoo’s listing of the "Best Fried Chicken."
8. Country 35 Diner (1504 Highway 35 South, Foxworth)
Head to this Foxworth diner, and you’ll find a buffet brimming with southern classics. Each and every item, including the amazing fried chicken, is home-cooked and prepared by the talented and super hospitable cook and owner Mrs. Candia. The fried chicken is pan-fried, rather than cooked in a deep fryer, resulting in what customers refer to as the "best fried chicken in the state."
9. Mississippi Fried Chicken and Bar-B-Que (518 Mississippi Dr., Waynesboro)
Please note, Mississippi Fried Chicken and Bar-B-Que has permanently closed down.
Crispy and delicious, the fried chicken at this Waynesboro eatery is the real deal. Aside from authentic southern fare, customers rave about the reasonable prices and true southern hospitality, making it easy to see why this restaurant has become a local favorite.
10. Mama Hamil’s (408 Magnolia St., Madison)
Head to this Madison eatery and you can browse a buffet loaded with smoky barbecue and southern favorites, including Mama Hamil’s specialty, "perfectly seasoned" fried chicken.
