Mississippi is home to some great eateries where you can fill up on the classic treat, and with summer quickly approaching, it seemed like the perfect time to put together a trail showcasing these eateries. 1. Boomer’s Horn Lake (1575 Nail Rd, Horn Lake)

In business since 1988, this Horn Lake drive-in is known for serving old-fashioned burgers along with some of the best ice cream around. From thick malts and shakes to cones and ice cream sundaes, your sweet tooth is practically guaranteed to be pleased at Boomer’s.

2. Velvet Cream (2290 Hwy 51 S, Hernando)

Known as "the Dip" by locals, this Hernando eatery has become famous for its sundaes, milkshakes, and homemade soft-serve ice cream, which comes in over 100 flavors. Aside from traditional items, the menu is also filled with signature creations, like the Elvis Shake, Mexican Shake, and the Mule Slobber.

3. Area 51 (117 W Commerce St, Hernando)

Another Hernando favorite, Area 51 features a variety of "handmade artisan ice cream," which is made from scratch daily. Among standard flavors, like chocolate and strawberry, you’ll find plenty of one-of-a-kind creations, such as blackberry goat cheese ice cream or peanut butter brownie. After one bite, you’ll quickly see why the ice cream at Area 51 has been named the "best in Mississippi" by PBS.

4. Sweet Frog (104 S. Railroad Ave, New Albany)

Continue your sweet trek with a stop at Sweet Frog. The New Albany eatery offers premium soft serve ice cream along with frozen yogurt and sorbet. Even better, there are "tons of toppings" you can add to your sweet treat. From sprinkles and nuts to fresh fruit and candy, the possibilities are virtually endless.

5. Waterwheel Homemade Ice Cream (1628 Sunset Dr, Grenada)

At this Grenada eatery, the homemade ice cream is made using old-fashioned recipes, fresh ingredients, and a waterwheel churn, resulting in some of the best in Mississippi. Boasting 35 flavors, the choices include standard options, like chocolate and vanilla, as well as seasonal ones, such as King Cake. The menu also includes classic treats, such as hot fudge sundaes, milkshakes, coke floats, and banana splits.

6. MAFES Sales Store on MSU Campus (925 Stone Blvd, Starkville)

Located in the Herzer Food Science Building on the MSU campus, the MAFES Sales Store is an extension of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. The campus store sells a variety of items that are produced onsite, including ice cream. A favorite during the summer, the ice cream comes in standard flavors as well as locally-inspired ones, such as Muscadine Ripple.
